We are looking into coding a bookmark manager with additional security features. What whould you consider a reasonable price for such a program?

    Hello  ,  Patrik

You are also talking  about encryption , passwords , storage/Mbs  etc , aren't you ? If you could   be more specific about the included features we could speculate about the pricing .

Depends what you mean by 'additional features'. I use a piece of software called 'SafePlace' on my Psion 5, which is an encrypted password repository that also protects the PDA from unauthorised access by making use of a much stronger password regime than the standard Psion password (which won't survive the full level-3 reset, for example, but does cope with level 1 (soft) and 2 (soft-ish) resets). You won't like the price, though - it's freeware... (although IIRC it was priced at £14, or whatever that translated into in old, pre-Euro Dutch money - 50 Guilders, or something).

Would this bookmark manager cope with different user IDs, in XP/W2K, for example? It would be good if the program were a standard service (at local machine level) that then invoked a specific user list according to the person logging onto the PC. This user list would be the one subject to encryption, password-protection and whatever.

As for price - less than TH, at maybe $20? Unless it's an absolute 'must-have', then maybe $30.

What you really need to do is mount a scare-tactic campaign, full of horror stories about how someone's entire life was ruined because a skiddie nicked their list of 'Favorites' and a few sundry on-line banking passwords - then post it to some of the 'popular' (aka. largely clueless) computing rags... Darn, must be hard running an ethical company! Grin Grin

mozar: Yes, I'm talking about those things but I can't disclose more imormation as we're only in a research and early design stage right now. Maybe I should ask what you whould want / pay for in such a program.

Ian: Thanks for your input. I'll pass this on.

Now, although I'm not exactly firing on all cylinders at the moment, this thought struck me -

Why not go for broke and employ a 512-bit encryption key like on the credit-card clearing network? It's absolutely no practical benefit over 128-bit (and the 'new' wireless 256-bit WEP standard), but would at least up the ante with the other producers - use it as a selling point ('unbreakable even with a supercomputer' and so on). And of course all encryption's pointless if a strong password isn't used, so have another section of the program generate a PGP-style key. Employ crypto-stenography and embed the pass-key in a picture of the Pope, or the dot over the 'i' in the word 'certify' in the text of John 3:33, or whatever.

Then sell it to the military for silly money - better than plugging it to a bunch of tight-fists like us Grin Grin Grin

  Hello  ,

Concerning encryption progams , we all know that already exist excellent ones (free) and it seems that PGP 8.0(?) is coming until the end of 2003 (with a free version).
Passwords generators , at least in home users scenario , are superfluous in my opinion and shows a relative lack of creativity .
Bookmark managers I have no experience with anyone until now.
I think that , one more time , what will make the price and create the demand  it will be its comparative advantages , the product's diferential ( as with TH against  others ATs) .
I do not keep anything confidential or personal in my machine , everything that remotely  threats my privacy or security  is always erased after it is used or accessed  or it is in  CD-Rs --- even received e-mails that I must keep.
Anyway , I know that a product  with the Hunter griffe will always be a serious option in its specific niche .
My only preocupation is about the day that a russian site makes a comparative test between bookmark managers .

    Regards ,
