New freeware utility - LExE

LExE is a small freeware utility that lists all executable extensions on *your* system. The Windows registry entries that determine which file is executable can vary from system to system, and this program will find those extensions that are marked as executable on your particular Windows installation. You will also be able to see if there are any suspicious entries marked as executable - on most systems the list should just read .exe, .scr, .com, .bat and .pif.

Distribution zip file available at http://www.misec.net/products/LExE.zip

Simply unzip LExE.exe to any directory and run it - no installation required.

If you find any bugs or have any problems at all, please report them in this thread or e-mail support (at) misec.net

Nice idea, (though I wasn't expecting a DOS box!!!). Presumably some Trojans assign other filetypes as executable, simply because AV/AT scanners would then miss them.

Well, you know what they say: Keep it simple stupid. I didn't think dragging in 300 KB of GUI code was really warranted in this case  Smiley

Very nice, light and quick, with the results you predicted. Thanks, Magnus.

Update: Version 1.1 with fixed exit prompt string ("Press Enter to Exit"). There is also a new "Freeware Utilities" page with more information available at http://www.misec.net/freeware.jsp

Thanks, Magnus. Does the new freeware page mean you have more goodies up your sleeve?

ran LExE.exe on XP and found:

1.  c:\windows\system32\login.cmd

Microsoft help says about this file:
"The program login.cmd is run whenever someone logs on to Telnet Server. You can edit the login.cmd file to change the text that appears when someone logs on, and you can use login.cmd to run other programs".

2.  c:\windows\system32\usrlogon.cmd

Microsoft Help search returned nothing on this file.

this normal?

Are you sure LExE returned c:\windows\system32\login.cmd and the other value? It should just return file extensions.
