Trojan Hunter finds Agent.280

Hi, I am new to this forum.

Question: TH Scanner found a registry key which it identified as "Agent.280".  What is Agent.280? Is it associated with IE? I had problems opening IE for a number of hours.

Symptoms:  Last evening I tried opening IE, and and the page would temporarily open up and then close by itself.  I tried numerous times to open IE with same results. I ran TH scanner and it told me that it found a registry key which it identified as a possible Agent.280 trojan. I cleaned the file. I rebooted, but the same problem kept occuring and I was unable to open IE.  I ran TH Scanner after a few reboots and the same registry key reappeared, so I cleaned again.

This morning I was able to open IE, but TH scanner found the same registry key again.  I cleaned it once again and it has not reappeared. I have been able to use IE all day.

Proplem seems to have gone away.

I am running Windows XP Home, with IE 6, on a Pentium 4.

Welcome to the forum jroesq,

There are many variants of Trojandownloader.agent.  280 is one of those variants.

Let's do some checking.  Please go to the link below and download HiJackThis.exe.  Install it in a folder of its own on your primary hard drive...not on the desktop or in a Temp folder.  (Example: Create a folder  C:\Program Files\HiJackThis.

Once you get it installed, please locate  HiJackThis.exe and rename it to some unique name such as  AnalyzeMe.exe.  The reason is that some of the newer criminal elements block HijackThis.exe for reading certain components of the system elements.  So by renaming  HiJackThis.exe, we fool those critters.

Then run a HiJackThis scan and post the scan log back here on this post.

Forgot to post the link.  Embarassed

I'm not seeing anything alarming in your HJT scan; however, these items concern me:

F3 - REG:win.ini: load=
F3 - REG:win.ini: run=

O15 - ProtocolDefaults: '@ivt' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Intranet Zone (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'file' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'ftp' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'http' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)
O15 - ProtocolDefaults: 'https' protocol is in My Computer Zone, should be Internet Zone (HKLM)

Would you please post a copy of the scan log from a TrojanHunter scan.  I need to see what registry entry it is detecting as malicious.

Be sure you have the latest definitions for TrojanHunter before you run its scan.  If you are running the trial version of TrojanHunter, please go to the link below and manually update to the latest rulesets/definitions.

Also, it is highly recommended that you upgrade your Windows OS to Service Pack 2.  XP-SP1 is not the most secure arrangement for XP.
