hgghg.dll

I have been trying to get rid of the this pesky dll which is the last remenent of some trojan.  The url that had anything on this dll is the following and is correct.

http://www.superadblocker.com/X/XEYMI.DLL-8174.html

I have followed your procedure for identifying trojans and deleting them.  I have tried more than 5 different trial virus, spyware, trojan removers and none seem to find this dll. But they did delete MSN messenger (Windows Live Messenger), now I'm in big trouble.

I have used "process viewer" and see that this dll attached itself to a few processes.  They are winlogon, explorer, iexplorer and sometimes run32dll.

Any help would be appreciated.  Cleaning the registry entrys relating to this dll get deleted but are back the next time I reboot.  Is there a way to lock the registry?  or slay a dll without killing the rest of the process?  Windows won't let me delete it because it is a running process.  I have teenagers so the Hijack this log is long.  I also note that I didn't delete Defender before installing Trojan Hunter.

Welcome to the forum Fab_Fred  Wink

Have you tried running TrojanHunter scanner while booted into SAFE MODE?  If not, please reboot into SAFE MODE and run a full scan using TrojanHunter.

Be sure you have used TrojanHunter's LiveUpdate to obtain the latest rulesets prior to rebooting into SAFE MODE and running a full scan.

Your HiJackThis log is showing nothing malicious; however, it does not seem to be showing everything.  There are no 02 or 020 items showing up.  (02= IE BHOs;  020 = Winlogon items).

Please post back concerning the TrojanHunter SAFE MODE scan and we'll go on from there.

Thanks for the quick response.

Yes, all steps were followed including the run in safe mode.

The latest rulesets were loaded as well.  I will run Hijack this from safe mode and normal mode and see if there is a difference.

Hmmm...still not seeing any 02 or 020 entries.  When you run the HJT, is IE open or closed?  All open windows should be closed down except HJT when running a scan.

Because I am not seeing anything, I would like to request that you jump over to the Gladiator forum and see if they can detect whatever it is that I am missing.

Here is a link on their forum that shows the removal of this hgghg.dll critter.

http://gladiator-antivirus.com/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t29526.html

I suggest that you create a new post on their forum with a fresh HJT scan log and let them assist in the removal.

Another very knowledgeable group concerning infection removal is at:

http://forum.hijackthis.de/

There is an English section on this forum.

Sorry that I am blind to whatever in your system is causing this.   Sad

I would like to suggest that you test your system for a rootkit infection using BlackLight.  It can be downloaded from the link below.  It's possible that this infection is hidden through a rootkit.  Be sure to read the intro info on the website.

http://www.f-secure.com/blacklight/blacklight.html

It didn't make any sense to me either yesterday when I sent the files as I knew I had some ie plugins that load all the time (ie adobe reader).  I went back to the major Geeks site and I found buried at the end of their long procedure the following note:

----------------------------------------------
*** IMPORTANT NOTE*** Once you have HijackThis installed in the proper location, as per Downloading, Installing, and Running HijackThis. Double-Click on "My Computer", Double-Click on "(C:)"; navigate to "C:\Program Files\HJT", Right-Click on "hijackthis.exe", select "Rename", rename to "analyse.exe" ( do not rename to analyse.exe.exe ) click inside the window to complete the renaming operation, close Windows Explorer. Done.

This is extremely important as there is a new variant of Virtumonde (Vundo), aka "Winfixer", that will not be detected unless you do the above.
-------------------------------------------------

So I did this last night and viola the BHOs showed up.  Including the infamous hghhg.dll still located in my windows\system32 folder.

I just redid it this morning in safe mode first thing with nothing running and here is the file.
HijackThis is now called G:\Analyze\find.exe

Yes!, Yes!, Yes...this helps mucho.  Wink

Please go to the following link and download KILLBOX.  You can save it on your desktop, but do not run it just yet.

http://www.subratam.org/main/index.php?option=com_content&task=view& amp;id=19&Itemid=41

You may wish to print the following instructions.

1.  Close all open windows.  Disable all security programs so that they will not interfere.

2.  Run another HJT scan.

3.  When the scan is completed, place a checkmark in the box next to the following items.  Be SURE only these items are checkmarked.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {873eb32d-ae1a-4183-89bd-45a77f761be4} - D:\WINDOWS\system32\ixt0.dll (file missing)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EC153B05-70D2-4CB3-8151-80B689941CF5} - D:\WINDOWS\system32\hgghg.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: hgghg - D:\WINDOWS\system32\hgghg.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: Internet Settings - D:\WINDOWS\system32\k4js0e17eh.dll (file missing)

4.  Click on Fixed Checked at the bottom of the HJT window.  Confirm that you want to fix these items and let HJT fix these items.

5.)  Now run Killbox and select Delete on Reboot.

6.)  Paste the line below into the box and press the red X button.

D:\WINDOWS\system32\hgghg.dll

7.)  When it asks you if you want to reboot, select yes to reboot the Computer.

8.)  After the reboot is complete, run another HJT log and post the results back here, please.

Hopefully the problem will be gone, but we need to check the HJT log again.

Unfortunately this little bug has done a few things to my registry.  when Killbox tries to reboot, it comes up with the message

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by external process.

As I don't know how to fix this one, In await your advice.
The lastest HiJackThis shows just the two file missing lines missing.  all the rest is the same.

Let me understand:

You get the message below any time you reboot now?

Quote:
PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been removed by external process

The message normally just means that Killbox did not do what it was requested to do.

And a HJT scan shows the following two entries still present?

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {EC153B05-70D2-4CB3-8151-80B689941CF5} - D:\WINDOWS\system32\hgghg.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: hgghg - D:\WINDOWS\system32\hgghg.dll

or does this one now have a (file missing) next to it.

O20 - Winlogon Notify: hgghg - D:\WINDOWS\system32\hgghg.dll (file missing)

Can you find/view hgghg.dll in the D:\Windows\System32 folder?

Be sure that you have changed the default settings of Windows to permit you to view all files and folders as per this link.

No, after you hit the red X in Killbox, the programs counts down to one and then provides that message.

If I do a normal exit, I don't get the message.

I can view the file in windows\system32 fine.  I just can't rename or delete it because (I believe) some windows setting.

I can send you a zipped copy of the DLL, if you wish.  It creates a file called ghhgh.ini which I assume has some personal info in it.  I also tried to install a new AntiVirus program which I believe the DLL tried to block because it wouldn't allow an update.

Sorry for the slow response...I'm in the process of switching my machine from NIS to KIS and got engrossed in the conversion fun.  Grin

Yes, please submit hgghg.dll for analysis.  Follow the instructions for submitting as per the link below.

http://forum.misec.net/board/FAQ/1139308293

Let's try another program to remove hgghg.dll.  Go to the link below and download Unlocker.

http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

Once you get unlocker installed:
Locate the file hgghg.dll
Right-click on hgghg.dll and select 'Unlocker'
In the window that appears select 'Unlock All'
In the drop down menu select 'delete'.

After Unlocker completes its work, reboot and see if hgghg.dll has been successfully removed.  Please post a NEW HJT log.

I am happy to say that after 5 attempts, multiple reboots, multiple error messages from Windows, and patience the dreaded hghhg.dll is gone.  I have submitted the dll to you as requested.  Thanks for all the Help, SiliconMan...

I have attached the latest Hijackthis log to see if there is anything else quirky about it.  This was done on a clean reboot in normal mode.
