Preventing Trojan Infection...

Each week vnunet.com asks a different expert to give their views on recent virus and security issues, with advice, warnings and information on the latest threats.

This week Gunter Ollmann, EMEA manager of X-Force Security Assessment Services at Internet Security Systems, offers vital advice on dealing with the threat of increasingly sophisticated Trojans, including steps companies can take to prevent Trojan incidents.

The malicious Trojan has been around for over a decade, and organisations are still struggling to manage the threat.

Key steps to prevent Trojan incidents:

1. Ensure that the corporate perimeter defences are kept continuously up-to-date
2. Filter and scan all content at the perimeter defences that could contain malicious content
3. Run local versions of your antivirus, firewall and intrusion detection software at the desktop
4. Rigorously control user permissions within the desktop environment to prevent the installation of malicious applications
5. Manage local workstation file integrity through checksums, auditing and port scanning
6. Monitor internal network traffic for odd ports or encrypted traffic.

Yes, this is one reason that I think that TH should have a corporate version, besides the personal one.  Especially if the corporate model could interface with a resident TH Desktops standard version, that way they can check each others work, "so to speak."

That's a valid point. I hadn't even bothered checking out acheton's link, since it was for corporate, networked environments, but your reply helps show a potential area of growth for TH.
