Don't know if it's related, but a further scan revealed spybot.  Also a file called "explorer.exe" is being created in the root of my D drive.  Is this related to Spybot??.  I cleaned then deleted all files after finding spybot, however svchost was one of the infected files, I'm not sure if the clean works on it.  I didn't find that the explorer.exe was connected with spybot on virus definitions given by Mcafee.  Any help?

I find that Norton does do one thing very well, which is they provide very detailed instructions on the removal of threats that they cover, usually a head and step above many others of the anti-viruses.  Luckily this is available publically and does not require having their product to use.  But it is one reason that I use there product as one of my "pay-for" AV's.

I stay away from their other products, as though they are useful there are usually other programs that work well. Not that I haven't bought them in the past.  However they sometimes offer more than the average user can handle and sometimes create problems, thinking of Norton Utilities.

I agree. I depise Norton products, and think that their AV is a useless pile of crap, but their virus encyclopaedia is second-to-none, and I always recommend it, especially for their excellent, comprehensive removal instructions.

Well it is like anything run by committee, slow to respond to evolving threats. However, it does an adequate job but not as a singular solution.  However, the new 2003 is better than it has been in the past few years.

Personal experience is very subjective, ain't it? My first PC came with an old Norton pre-installed, and it screwed up that box something good. Since then, I've had a very low opinion of them. Still, they do some things very well, and their virus research centre is the best there is.

Yeppers! it is.  I think though that they cannot please everyone, which is true of any software company (Take notes Magnus).  All any software company can do is be honest when it makes a mistake or give the reason why the made the choice they did.  Which is what Magnus does very well.

I think the only Norton app that I actually miss is Disk Doctor. I still have an early version to recover kids' floppy disks at work (you'd be amazed at how many of them carry their entire coursework on one floppy - with no backup...).

Anyone got any alternatives to that util?
