Update windows...

Hi...A computer where I work running Win2k had a few trojans on it (Ghost, IRC ZCrew, one other) which TrojanHunter took care of, and the computer seems to be clean of Trojans and viruses.

Oddly, at start up, a small "Update" box (looks just like the Windows Update box, with icon and all) appears in the upper left hand corner of the screen...and just sits there, minimized. When I maxamized the Update box, it's empty. This little Update box appeared with an IRC/mIRC box originally & was the first indicator of a problem on the PC.

After Norton & TrojanHunter, all that remains is this Update box, which always appears after start-up...We can't figure out what it is. A leftover from one of the Trojans maybe?

Does anyone have any idea?

As a side note...Norton id'd viruses/trojans on the computer (idiots installed the AV software *AFTER* infection) and claimed to delete all the files. A few days later, the AV warnings were popping up again...Ran TrojanHunter & it seems to have done what Norton couldn't (regardless of what it said it was doing).

Excellent software...Recommending it to bosses for all computers.

Anyway, thanks for any help anyone can give me on this mystery "Update" box.

What we would need to know is which viruses and trojans that were cleaned, specifically each one does different things to the computer.  Generally, however you can look in the "run" portions of your registry, which in Win2000 I am personally not familiar with as its registry keys for the "run" portions are different than my WinME machine.  Someone with more Win2000 experience will probably be able to help you.

In general, the Autostart Explorer in the "Tools" Menu of TrojanHunter should help you find those entries.  You should also look to see if the Process Viewer of TrojanHunter shows differrent information than your own process in Administrative Tools part of Win2000, this could indicate that something has been done so the normal tools don't display the tasks.  Also looking at the Windows List from the "Tools" Menu could be helpful to identify what is opening that window.

I personally think that a there are three major defensive software which should be on each machine, or operating at the companies router or server.  An Anti-Virus, Anti-Trojan, and A Basic Software Firewall that stops outbound traffic that is not authorized by the user.  Good luck in talking to your bosses.
