Yeah, I read about one piece of trick code that could activate the webcam without user notification - whoever controlled this little daemon could actually watch (and hear, if mic'ed up too) whatever was going on around the target PC. Course, the bandwidth hit would be a giveaway if a PC suddenly started streaming video. I leave mine unplugged (it can be used as a camera/camcorder as well, so it doesn't need to be attached all the time). That site is a gem - not sure I ever saw Krusty that mad! The GUID thing is probably safer explained at http://www.computerbytesman.com/privacy/supercookie.htm, but PsyKo's pretty much makes use of the same mechanism. There are plenty of ways of tagging a user's PC from any number of GUIDs, just a case of getting the PC to dish out a specific location in the Registry (usually). One sneaky bit of information - M$ is 'on to' the SuperCookie thing, but still wants to track MediaPlayer users. The latest updates (at least the last two) have left ALL of the stuff changed in the SuperCookie dodge well alone, but have tagged the Player with other IDs - check out 'Help - About...' and see if the Product ID number matches the 'SuperCookie', for example (it won't, BTW). It's possible to blank that with zero's too, but at only 20-bits, it's not really long enough on its own - will narrow a user down to 1/6,000 or so of the world's total population (the WMP GUID/SuperCookie is a 32-bit code - enough to individually ID 2/3 of the world). However, combine that with other GUIDs on the PC and things can be narrowed down somewhat. Becky's and GRC are good sites - I've noticed several users move from one to the other (like PhantOm, who always had good knowledge and advice - Mozar here will back me on that one). I don't watch Wilders, but do visit their download site.
