Uninstalling

Not yet upgraded to 5.0 but I have noticed that my program files list 4.2; 4.5; 4.6; 4.7. I guess it is best to uninstall these? But I only have 4.7 indicated in add/remove programs. Would appreciate a steer on the procedure to follow.

Simply delete the old TrojanHunter folders.

Ah, as simple as that. I did consider it, but wondered if delete would undertake all the uninstall actions.
Appreciate your help.

The registry entries are used by the latest version, so you wouldn't want to delete those as the program would stop working Smiley

Ah, again! So if I run a registry cleaner between deleting/uninstalling  and installing 5.0, it would screw-up the new version?

No, registry cleaners shouldn't touch entries used by programs that are still installed.

The reason I mentioned a registry cleaner was that I've seen many comments of uninstallers doing a less than thorough job on clearing out all the entries on execution and sometimes code that is left behind conflicts with the new version. And I might well have tried that.

However, I am still a little confused because the instructions to load 5.0 suggest that you do a complete uninstall before upgrading. Would not that action and/or not using a cleaner, between uninstalling and upgrading, clear out all the existing registry entries?

Really appreciate your time to help out a curious member.

Regards.

The uninstaller of TrojanHunter leaves behind the primary folder (example: C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.7 folder) with the License.tlf file and the Ignore list.  That way the user can, if desired, move the License.tlf file and the Ignore list into the new version's folder once the new version is installed and then delete the old version's folder.  Therefore, there are registry entries that also get left behind by the uninstaller.

I put together the installation instructions in the FAQ section so that it would show how to completely get rid of old versions of TH when a new version is installed.  I did not include anything concerning registry cleaners because I feel it is potentially hazardous for "novice" users to run registry cleaners.  Too much potential of a registry cleaner inadvertently removing something vital in the system registry....particularly with new Vista.  Developers of registry cleaners are still "learning" Vista too.

In TH V5.0, one of the best new features is the program LiveUpdate feature which downloads/installs program revisions.  Once the learning curve bugs are all ironed out (considering all the various Windows OS systems, configurations, etc.), users will not have to be concerned about "installation instructions".  Magnus is about to post a new version of TH that will have to be manually installed because it has changes in LiveUpdate itself.  LiveUpdate cannot update itself.  Magnus stated that is new version will be available in the next week or so.
