Upon running my regular maintainance scan this morning, TH 4.7 throws up this error: -
Registry scan
No suspicious entries found
Inifile scan
No suspicious entries found
Port scan
No suspicious open ports found
Memory scan
No trojans found in memory
File scan
Error: Error while pre-processing C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB908519$\spuninst\updspapi.dll: Cannot create file "\\.\AUX". The system cannot find the file specified
No trojan files found

Anything to worry about?
Cheers

Is this error 100% repeatable or is it random from TH scan to scan?.

As you probably know, the blue directories found in the C:\Windows folder such as C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB908519$ are the uninstallers for MS Updates (hotfixes) that you have installed via Windows Update.  If your system is running okay following your monthly Windows Update, you can delete these blue directories in total.  They are only needed if you want to uninstall a Windows Update...which most probably you will never do.  I usually wait a week after a Windows Update and if all is running fine, I delete them.  Only the ones that are C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallxxxxxxx$. ; releases a lot of disk space as well.

If you get this error message again in a subsequent scan, please email the file C:\WINDOWS\$NtUninstallKB908519$\spuninst\updspapi.dll to support@misec.net as I'd like to have a look at it to determine what's causing the error.

Siliconman01 Thanks for your swift rely. I removed the file in question and rescanned - no error. Therefore, I followed your suggestion regarding the Blue Directories, being careful to delete just the ones beginning with what you mention, with no adverse behaviour. Reclaimed some 270+Mb in HDD space as well. Many thanks.

Magnus I still have the offending file in my recycle bin, will restore it and send it to you for your perusal. Will await your reply sir.

Much Obliged.

File sent.

Another huge block of files that can be removed is in the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder.  These are the files that are downloaded by Windows Update when it is getting ready to install a MS hotfix.  Once the hotfix is installed, these files are not used again unless a hotfix to the hotfix is issued.  If Windows Update cannot find the original hotfix download, it will download it again when/if needed...which is rare.

All you need to do is go to the C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder and delete everything that is in the Download folder.  DO NOT delete the Download folder itself- just the files that are in it.
