TrojanHunter detection rates

Thanks for the interesting blog on TH detection rates Gavin -

http://blog.misec.net/2007/08/03/trojanhunter-detection-rates/

I'm wondering if TH is still targeted on certain types of malware (trojans ??  Smiley) and if so, how would you define the difference between 'trojan malware' and 'non-trojan malware' as things currently stand?

If that trojan/non-trojan distinction is meaningful - do the different types have different 'modus operandi' ('modi operandi' Huh ?? Grin) which require different detection/removal methods? I guess what I'm asking is whether TH works in a substantially different way from most current AVs? - without giving away any trade secrets of course!  Wink

It's getting harder again to define malware, when a Worm infects the system by viral methods and then downloads more trojans.

We're satisfied with the amount of signatures and are working hard on a new heuristic engine. We won't be limiting detection to any specific type of malware, but we do avoid viruses. We WILL detect some files which are viruses in some cases, and will detect virus related files - especially when a small trojan starts the larger infection or something like that.

TH does work in a substantially different way yes.

With regards to cleaning malware, a lot can still be cleaned by TH methods. We'll possibly be forced to work on better removal once the heuristics are detecting more. If it needs a special removal method and we are the only ones to detect it, we will be the ones asked for help.

Thank you for your informative replies Gavin, and for outlining some of the ways that TrojanHunter is developing. I appreciate that malware is complex and rapidly evolving and so constant development and innovation is required in tools for detecting and removing it.

What you've outlined confirms my feeling that a lot of research and innovation is going into TH development and also that Mischel Internet Security has that flexibility and ability to respond to customer needs which probably the more 'corporate' security solutions don't have, so it's really good to hear  Smiley
