Conflict- TH V4.5 scanner & Nvidia Desktop Mgr

Some users are experiencing a conflict problem when running a TH scan with V4.5 if they have the Nvidia Desktop Manager active at the time of the scan.  TH scanner will lock up the system.

To avoid this, deactivate the Nvidia Desktop Manager before starting the TH scan.   Wink

I've been having this same issue with TH v4.6. I found a way to stop the lock ups (without disabling nVidia Desktop Manager) that works for me. After looking in Event Viewer, I saw at ton of errors with "nview" at the time of the lock ups. This lead me to search further, and I found this, which was for a different application, but has worked for me with Trojan Hunter:

Control Panel>nVidia Desktop Manager>Applications Tab>Click "Add">Browse to Trojan Hunter in Program Files>Click on it to add it to the list>OK>Click on "Trojan Hunter" in the Application window>Click the disable button>When you click "disable" you are given a list of check box options. The master option is "Enable nView Desktop Manager for this application and/or window class." Remove the check from that box and choose "OK">Click OK to exit.

I just did a scan and no lock up this time!!

Hope this helps.  Smiley

I've just come across this thread, when I could have done with it earlier.  Embarassed Still 5.0 doesn't seem to have caused the same problems with the Nvidia Desktop Manager so far anyway.

So TH V5.0 and the Nvidia Desktop Manager are not conflicting with each other on your system ?

Not so far - no system lockup when running a full TH scan, and that's without having unchecked anything in the Nvidia DM.

I'm running TH5 with Nvidia, and am having the lockup problem. Oddly, it does not lock up on every single scan; sometimes it will work, but other times it stops responding, and the only way to get out of the lockup is to shut down the process in task manager. I tried the work-around suggested in a previous post -- to simply disable nvidia desktop for the TrojanHunter program -- but, alas, that made things worse. When I tried TH under the altered Nvidia conditions, the screen simply went blank as soon as I hit the scan button, and the computer turned off (as if someone had pulled the plug) and then rebooted. I tried a second time, and the same thing happened.

The scans will run fine in safemode, and they all come up clean; and on the occasions when I can run scans normally, they also come up clean. It's just that this lockup problem keeps recurring. I'm glad I found this thread, because I was beginning to think I had some invidious type of virus or trojan, but I don't think that is the case. I am running Trend Micro Office Scan, Spy Sweeper,  Spybot, Adaware, and Spyblaster, in addition to the TrojanHunter (hey, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean there aren't nasties out there lol)-- oh and I also have the Microsoft Defender program.

Anyway, back to Nvidia -- are there any other workarounds that have been successful for people? I'm really hoping this can be fixed, because I like TH and don't want to have to go into safemode every time I want to run a scan. Huh

I run KAV, Spybot and Ad-Aware, and haven't had the problem with TH5. Maybe try temporarily disabling some of the other security software while running a TH scan?

Thanks, Max, but I think it's just the Nvidia Desktop. I have another computer that has all the same software, but not the Nvidia desktop, and Trojanhunter works fine on that computer. My laptop also runs TH with no problems. It seems like the only difference is Nvidia.

Did you try this fix submitted by La_Luna above?

You can disable the nVidia desktop which has always solved the problem on older TH versions, so I'd do that. I don't use nVidia desktop now, never have Smiley

It would also be interesting to see if you get the lock up when running a "scheduled scan" via TH.   Wink

Siliconman: I did indeed try the cure described by La Luna, and had high hopes for it. Perhaps I didn't express the results well enough in my last post, but after I disabled Nvidia desktop for Trojan Hunter, the problem got worse. As soon as I hit the scan button, the screen went black, and computer turned off and then rebooted. This happened twice.

It seems that if I completely disable the Nvidia desktop, it destabilizes my other programs; computer shuts down and it tells me that the signal to my monitor is out of range.

I have not set up any scheduled scans with TH because I thought I should try to get it to a point where it would reliably get through a scan normally first. Do you have reason to believe that a scheduled scan would fare better than an impromptu one?

The odd thing is that sometimes the scan will work and TH will not hang, even though I have not changed any settings in those instances. It will not run at all, though, when I try to use the workaround that was successful for La Luna.

Thanks for your thoughts.

When the scheduled scan runs, it does not have the TrojanHunter GUI open.  I'm wondering if it's the TH GUI or the scan engine itself that is causing the interference.

Also, what version of the NVIDIA driver and desktop manager are you running and what is the model of your NVIDIA card?

It's Nview Desktop Manager version 110.09, and Nvidia GeForce 6200 SE. I don't know how to find the driver version. I was oblivious to the existence of this Nvidia thing until I saw it mentioned over and over again in errors on Event Manager.
