Closed Com Port in Windows XP

I am using a Magellan GPS program that requires the GPS to connect to a Com port.  When connected, as soon as I ask the program to 'talk' to my computer it says that it cannot open the Com port.  It can 'find' the GPS when connected but cannot communicate.  I have a McAfee firewall but turning it off makes no difference.  I use Windows XP Home Edition.  Help

Check the following:-

COM ports (by which I mean the older serial ports, rather than USB) might need to be set up as if using a modem. Set speed to 9600 baud, hardware handshaking and 8-bit. This should set things to the point where the devices can negotiate a higher speed etc.

Also, check the Magellan software - IIRC, there's an option to change the COM port it tries first, and the order after than. I use COM2 rather than COM1 (which has an external fax-modem on it. If I want successful comms to any device (like Psion as well), then I have to tell it to use this port first. I also uncheck the others, so it only looks on COM2 and won't get bothered by any funny results from the modem. Make sure any settings in the Magellan s/w mathc the port setting in Windows.
