Yeah, but you can link to them on another web site by entering the URL...

Posting binaries would slow this place down - check out SecureComp (news.securecomp.org) for a news server that lets you post pics - just be prepared to see loads of pictures of cats there - many proud cat 'keepers' in that Forum (owners is too strong a word where cats are concerned... Grin).

Ain't that the truth!

BTW, whilst kittens are cute, no-one can ever describe the smell of a wet cat... (and that of wet dogs is pretty indescribable too...) Grin

ian

maybe you can answer a couple of questions for me.

regarding newsgroups... i did subscribe to securecomp on the server you gave me, no problem.  i use netscape newsgroups reader (mozilla 4.76).  right now i am (and have been) successfully reading and posting on the news.grc.com server

first question: where do i find a list of all servers, in which i can search for newsgroups?

second question: (and this may be netscape specific) i am having probs with a server called "news".  i used to access it when i was using another isp, but now it keeps giving me an error message saying "no permission for [my IP addy]".

i can view server properties for "news", and i can remove it via right-click menu options, but it just regenerates itself when i reopen newsgroups.

in other words, it is always there now, and always telling me my IP address has no permission when i try contacting the host.

"refresh list" gives me no different results (get same no permission dialog).

i could just shine it on, but i'm curious why it's behaving this way, and wonder what can be done about it.  maybe i should pose the question to the securecomp group.

thanks for any input.

To be honest, I've never tried to find a list of news servers, but I have experienced the 'not permitted' thing. At the time, I'd switched ISPs, but had (still have) retained the email accounts. The only way I got round this was to switch news servers to that of my default ISP (the one I dialed in 'Contacts'), then try a 'Public Access' news server.

Try these pages for lists of 'Public Access' news servers - they may be slow, depending on where you are, but they should work from any ISP -
http://home.snafu.de/hweede/pulin.htm
http://tools.rosinstrument.com/proxy/news.htm
http://directory.google.com/Top/Computers/Usenet/Public_News_Servers/

AFAIK, none of them include SecureComp, or GRC, so they're not really that complete!

NB: many servers are not intentionally 'public'. This is usually because of a mistake by the person who set up the server. When they spot the mistake, public access will be blocked, so since most of those lists are a bit out-of-date the servers may not all work. Even if they do, the server may only be 'reaod-only' for outsiders, and only the hosts customers being given posting rights...

thank you for the public access servers, ian.  i will look around further at those items very soon.

i figure if i find just a few more newsgroups and support forums such as this one and winbbs, they will have to pry my butt out of this chair with a crowbar

Glad you liked the links! I hadn't needed to use open access for so long now - about 3 years - and back then they always seemed to stop working after a couple of days. Over a 28.8Kbps modem, downloading a new newsserver's list of newsgroups was a pain in the rear, just to have them locked out so soon afterwards. The situation's much better nowadays I guess.

The Spare Room never needed any invites for cat-posters, it must have been the online version of catnip they use on the web-front page  that attracted them all Grin The best one recently was that kitten leaping away from two mean looking red cardboard boxes on the lawn. Or did I mean the body-artHuh

those truly were impressive news server lists.  left me with my jaw on my chest, trying to pick one.  got sleepy and picked one with 49k message headers.  i hear you on the old dial up.  fortunately cable modem made short work of that download.

Yeah, I'm blessed with ADSL now - have had it for the past 18 months, so the 'pleasure' of trying to grab NG contents at that speed is fading fast. It took so long for British Telecom to sort out my exchange that I'd even bought and used a USR 56K Message Modem for a year before this!

It still took a while to grab all 80-odd thousand SecureComp headers, though... Grin

i'm running cable modem now, but i used to run something called one-way cable modem.  are you familiar with that?  very odd, it was, but until cox communications moved into our area, it was the best broadband available.

one-way cable modem, as the name implies, uses analog dial up for the upstream, and cable for the downstream.  so i had to use a phone line in conjunction with the cable line.  it was called perkinet.  LOL!

very buggy software, too.

anyway, that was then.  i still keep a dial up isp for cable modem down time, and i'm thankful to have it when mr.broadband decides to go on vacation.

I think we skipped the one-way cable phenomenon - although remote areas have something similar with a satellite downlink and phone uplink system. My city was one of the first 6 in the UK to go live with ADSL, but it wasn't across all exchanges (I had to wait 18 months from signing up, but at least I got free installation for my pains - saved £150 at the time)

I hear plenty of people talk about downtime, but must be blessed with a service provider that doesn't suffer it! So far (touch wood) I've never had the pleasure of resorting to dialup. I keep my modem handy for fax and telephony stuff, but these days that's about it. Even so, it was such a big improvement over my previous cheap Rockwell modem (never saw over 43K from that '56K' toy, but the USR one has never dropped to below 51K) that I don't regret the £80 it cost, even for a year. As far a I've experienced, USR modems have always out-performed other brands (and it must have been a weak moment when I bought that lame internal generic device...).
