Why www.?

Can anyone explain to me why when i go to some websites i can type the name without the "www" in front and get directed to the site.  But on others, if I don't type the "www", I get redirected to a search page.  So, 2 questions.  Why does this happen and how do I ensure my site functions as the former example and not the latter?  Thank you.

This happens because the web site administrator hasn't configured his site settings properly. I don't know of any good solution other than making sure you type "www." when the site requires it.

Michele,
a good source of information for issues like that,
would be a site like: www.theeldergeek.com
you can register there and ask questions about such things and other questions that you may have about your operating system.
volunteers knowledgeable in their own areas will gladly answer your questions and help you with issues on your machine.
