Highest/Lowest IPs...?

Possibly the dullest question ever asked here (may as well start the ball rolling, then!)

What's the highest and lowest incoming IP address you've seen in real life? I mean, I know the min and max IP4 address range, but the top and bottom never feature in my firewall logs...

4.62.19.129 is the lowest incoming in my logs, 220.192.183.139 is the highest (apart from odd shouts to 224.0.0.5, but they're either outward or loop-through).

Go on, I dare you to join in!

ok, pass the ball to the next fellow...

I have a 4.46.244.* hitting me now and last week I had bumped into a 222.176..., at least I think that was the beginning of the IP Roll Eyes  They're  both on Gnucleus (or that sharing net) I didn't write down the triple deuce IP, but was impressed because it was an ultrapeer and had fingers extending out to some 90 others with just over a terabyte shared total...

a friggin terabyte... wow, never thought I'd see that  Shocked

anyways, the connection was lost fairly quickly- I expect his search thruput had something to do with the break.

NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT! NEXT!
Cool

Still waiting for anything lower or higher (sheesh - sounds like I'm on 'Play Your Cards Right'). Is that new low still on Gnucleus?

And - you've corrected the sig! Is that what you're using 'world-wide' now, then?

I'm pretty sure it was a gnucleus hit, he hammered ports in that area for over an hour (but also checked other ports, below 1000... persistent little pecker, eh?) Wink

the sig is ready for prime time, methinx- I'll add it to xnews for todays slew of posts, missed posting there last night as other things poped up.  yeah, world-wide soon, my friend.  Grin Grin

Not much to contribute here except that 224.0.0.5 is a multicast address (IGMP protocol) and is reserved for OSPF routers! I bet you all wanted to know this!  Wink Smiley

It's good info in case anyone lurked by here, Ach. I had a big issue (not the mag) with that service about 18 months back with some server in BT's system (at Bletchley - d'you think SIS was trying to contact someone...? Grin). For some reason, it was attempting to route packets to multicast via my PC - not the quickest way of getting there! IIRC, I got exactly 720 hits per hour from 4 different source IPs - each hour, the source IP cycled to the next one for another 720 tries.

How low can you go?

Just got this one -
4.41.118.166 - Genuity, 225 Presidential Way, Woburn, MA, USA

You see? I'm still checking this kind of nonsense - must have just a bit too much spare time... Grin

That is interesting. Given the growth of the Net, very low IPs like that must be increasingly rare, I would have thought.

I see some very odd grouping in terms of IP addresses, presumably due to the growth in net use. For example, ChinaNet has a couple of huge IP blocks, one in the 61.x.x.x range and the other in 218.x.x.x, all split up by province. Some provinces have blocks in each group.

Some ranges are pre-allocated (like the multicast addresses at 224.0.0.x), but lots are still available, despite dire warnings that over 4 billion IPs are not enough.

And when IP6 is ratified (i.e IP numbers up to 255.255.255.255.255.255 - eek!), the whole show can begin again!

I read somewhere recently about the Pentagon beginning planning on preparing for the introduction of IP7. THat sounds like a nice bureaucratic gravy train to get on.

One would have to say 'Why?' - IP6 is supposed to give us all a few thousand IP addresses each - one for the washing machine, one for the VCR, one for the light switch in the dining room - oh, better allow one for the PC too!

Sounds like they're planning something very sneaky - their own extra bit (as if 281,474,976,710,656 IP addresses isn't enough, they want to run in a world with 72,057,594,037,927,936)

Sound reasoning, but why would defence contractors ask why? If the blank cheque departmnt of the Pentagon turned up at the door and said, "we want to pay you truckloads of money for a totally superfluous project", how many would say no?  Grin

Maybe they're planning so far ahead, they're preparing for the day we have a solar system to track/monitor/snoop on? 'Today, the world - tomorrow ...' Cheesy

Eureka! That was it! I remember now! It was another Discover magazine, and it was talking about IPs for space  probes, etc. Thanks, Ian.
