PS2, X-Box or GameCube?

Which would you have?

Personally, I'm inclined to go buy a PS2, hook it up to my TV and hi-fi (through some unused audio inputs set aside for laserdisc players) and also use it as a home DVD player... The price is now down to £159, with X-Box at £199 and GameCube at £129 (but I'd also have to shell out on a separate DVD player for that one).

i have a ps2, but it's up to you....xbox......yeah i hear it's good but i don't like microsoft.....if you want like a "party" kind of thing then i'd suggest game cube...nintendo has some fun ass party games, mainly super smash brothers and mario party......otherwise ps2 has dvd player, and probably a wider selection of games.....i actually got super bust-a-move 2 for ps2 for 20 dollars the other day.....games are getting cheap for ps2......but it's up to you

Cheers, Kayrac. Have you used the DVD-player side of it, then?

I'm not a fan of X-Box - I figure I've already got a more powerful PC and it's about the same thing under the hood. PS2 can use PSX/PSone games too, can't it? Plenty of them around for not much. I remember seeing X-Games (? I think) on a PSX, which was crazy 'cos it even let me Luge down Sunset Boulevard - there's my character flapping his arms as he scooted along past bikers and skaters on what is basically a tray sled.

One of the kids at my school brought his PS2 in and I hooked it up to the projector and the sound system in my teaching room, so playing Blade2 and Pod Racer was big, loud fun - almost made me forget I was supposed to be in the other IT suite showing it off for visitors to our school's Open Evening. I had to trim a bit of the yellow shield from the video connector for a secure connection, but there was otherwise not too much fiddling. The light gun was a bit erratic - it wasn't ideal, reflecting back off a matt projection screen.

There was a pre-Christmas deal on PS2 that I saw a few days back - included a 'free' racing wheel and pedal set and F1 Grand Prix for the same price, but by the time I got to the store, they'd sold out... (like probably only had a couple to sell on offer...).

yeah the dvd player works....you don't even need to buy a remote, although it might take a little bit to get used to using the control to play the dvd's.....yes all prior PS games will work on the ps2, but only ps2 games will save onto the ps2 memory card, so if you want to save some normal PS stuff, you need to have a normal PS memory card

I didn't realise that - sneaky. I thought it was a hardware compatibility (like a different socket), but they must've coded the PS2 memory with some sort of software lock. I notice all the extra memory (unofficial stuff) always says they must be used alongside the official 8MB card.

The remote's only £20 (or £10 for a 3rd-party version), so it may save some confusion if I get it anyway Grin

I'd recommend a PS2, too. I like the DVD player, especially. Works fine on my Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition. Grin

Well, time's caught up with me 'cos just as I'd decided to go shopping, the shops pulled all their special offers and the 'Christmas Prices' came out - £170 for the PS2, with no freebies and only one controller. If I want any kind of deal, they kick in at about £200 to £250 (or £270 for one of those natty paint-jobbed consoles). Roll on the January sales - maybe they'll have some PS2 over-stock to shift on, especially since X-Box is now at £152 including 2 games.
