ahhh well, I am fairly well known for being a freeloader,
errrrmmm I mean a freeware hunter! <g>

anyways, this would be my first webforum post as a *registered* TH user.
I must say it was a difficult decision I was faced with over the past two
months - but in the end the fact that Magnus has given a shareware
product that continues to allow autoupdate and realtime protection - long
after the share period ended was the real clincher for me.

I would have liked to eval BOC, but was really
looking for an on demand as well as an on access - so probably would have
been a little biased there.

The only real competition I found was TDS, I
loved the *extra* gadgetry and the 'raw power' look and feel of it

but... it boiled down to TH being lighter on resources,
customized/homebaked rules, good rate of updates, rapidly expanding
trojan death list, responsive developer (who also posts at my favorite
haunt, news.securecomp.org/securecomp - Thanks Mr MSmiley and in no small
part, the fact it is $15usd less with as much or more than the
competition...  hmmm, no brainer for me in the end...

Well, just wanted to pop in and mention what I felt about a great product
and pat myself on the back a little for what I feel to be well spent hard
earned dough - also to say I find web boards a little slow and awkward,
so no reason to think I don't like being here - I'm always checking back
in for a lurk or three Cool

Nice to see the choice was well-researched - you tried the same ones I did (many moons ago now) and came to the same decision, too! Plenty of users have commented about the load that TDS puts on a system, but they console themselves in the fact it's pretty good at the job. There was also the question raised elsewhere about the need to register with DiamondCS before evaluating TDS-3, but perhaps that's changed now? When I evaluated TDS, it was a previous incarnation and the pre-registering wasn't an issue.

These web boards are much more bearable on a fast link. I tried it a couple of weeks ago on my sister-in-law's iBook, using a regular 56K modem over an AirPort link, and it crawled compared to my home system, which is on ADSL and 4 times quicker in MHz (note to Apple users: I know that's not the fairest comparison!!!!). Of course, it may be down to Magnus' bandwidth - it's especially slow when an update has just been released! Just be glad we're prevented from actually posting binaries here, too! Can you imagine what it would be like if pictures of cats and cartoons were also flying down the wires, like on SecureComp?

Well I certainly won't waste anymore space PGPsigning posts here!  heh, the yabtags are well hidden come verify time so - badsigs abound (although I guess viewing page source would work, not worth all that though Roll Eyes

To be fair to other players in the market - I did buy (and still use) TC a couple years ago - updates and improvements seem to be slowing considerably since they moved servers - scans are nice and quick though, just a lack of confidence for me at this point.  Also, I gaveTauscan a couple test drives over time and recently, just didn't convince me.  For backup (like once a month scanning of d/l directory before backup) I will keep Ants and TFAK, but again no comparison to TH.

So a happy TH! user I am! Cool

Now for some more yabbin and a bit more
(I think I'm getting dizzy from all this code)[color=LimeGreen](I think I'm getting dizzy from all this code)[color=LimeGreen](I think I'm getting dizzy from all this code)[color=LimeGreen](I think I'm getting dizzy from all this code)

Thanks Ian - in no small part, satisfied customers such as yourself, as well played a major role in my decision to buy TH,  responsiveness and support is *very* important to me!

I see Redleg that you like all the YABBC tags, and that you chose fonts that were really loud.  I was wondering if that your choice of fonts comes from being in the Field Artillery, that they need to be loud.

Grin More likely the need to yell "Is this the chopper back to base?"...

One thing that still surprises me about the opinions TH gathers - there are loads of users who like it, but hardly any tests that use the current version. I'm in on a thread in the French forum which highlights this - all the ones we can find are based on TH v1. It can't be easy for users making up their minds when it apparently scores so low (although 0.02% false alarms on one test put it pretty near the top of that comparison!). Some (like PCFlank) seem biased (maybe a strong word, but they miss off BOClean, for example, and include a few non-specialist AVs - of which Kaspersky has always had the best success, yet it comes out TOP, above TDS). There are 'CheckMark' awards for AT's, but again, the only players who have gone for these are the big-name AVs - presumably the cost is too high and the marketing benefits too low for everyone else to be bothered with it.

jammin- yeah, you guessed it artillery colors do well with me.  as for the loudness, Yikes!  I was trying the yabb "glow"  font should be default though (at least I didn't change that)

Ian, I'm hoping Eric Howes runs that retest of AT/AV he did early this year. He is very thorough and documents well, if there is an unbiased voice out there - I for one trust it is his.  Lately I have been playing around on my second PC with things, so far so good Smiley
