It's a curious fact that nuclear power is the cleanest way of generating massive quantities of energy (beyond the level that current wind, solar, tidal etc technology can produce) until it comes to dealing with the spent fuel rods and decomissioning old reactors. Of course, Europe is still a union of sovreign states (for the moment), which makes the kind of transcontinental pressure seen from the US fossil fuel lobbies difficult to maintain.
