Wasn't there also some theoretical plan for making Venus habitable using micro-organisms? Another thing I recall from the old memory banks was something about 'seeding' the Venutian upper atmosphere with microscopic plant life, to photosynthesize the CO2 atmosphere and create rainfall. Apparently this plan would take about 200 years, but according to the idea, the planet could eventually be made habitable (at just about the time we were supposed to have finally knackered this planet, we could 'jump ship', as it where, and give Earth time to heal).

Book:
Child of Venus by Pamela Sargent (SciFi, but nice idea)

Hi Ian,
I think that the plan you're referring to was for Mars(supposed to be the next planet "we" will colonize). This plan was supposed to take "only" 50 years to make Mars "inhabitable".I have my doubts about the faisability of
this plan Wink

I remember something right along the line of what Ian has described. Sad thing is, I would have never remembered it at all if not put in front of me.

Have fun.......... Grin

Plans abound for making both places more habitable (I think the Terraforming link I gave has both mentioned). However, Mars will be the next planet, (though the Moon will probably have permanent colonists first), purely by virtue of it's atmosphere not crushing and boiling any colonists to death. Venus has too much atmosphere, but I guess that's preferable to Mars, where some strange sort of 'Total Recall' system would have to pump extra gas into the thin air. That said, there's lots of sub-surface water (as ice) that could be released in a similar manner to those floods (evidence already observed) that apparently followed meteor strikes. Just need a good power source to electrolyse it into gas and we'll be away...
