TH Guard doesn't autostart
« on: Apr 6th, 2009, 2:57pm »
Quote Quote  Modify Modify

TH Guard never seems to startup automatically when I restart my computer. I switch on 'Load on startup' in Settings (and click OK), but it doesn't make it load on computer startup. After restarting the computer and running TH Guard manually, I find the Load on Startup option is now unchecked. (It does remain checked after I check it, but only until next time I restart the computer.)

Welcome to the forum bfinn,  Cheesy

Please try this on your Vista system.

1.  Unload THGuard...exit it from memory.

2.  Go to START>Programs>TrojanHunter and right click on THGuard.

3.  Select "Run as Administrator"

4.  Once the THGuard icon appears in the Notification tray, right click on it and select Settings.

5.  Checkmark the "Load on Startup" option (If this option is already checked, uncheck and then recheck it.)

6.  Click on OK to save the option.

Does that "fix" the problem for you?

Do you have other security programs such as AdAware's AdWatch or Spybot which block changes to the RUN registry keys?  Is so, turn off that option and then set up THGuard to run on Startup.  Reboot and see if that fixes the problem and then set the other program's registry block option back on.

Does it have an option to protect the startup (RUN) registry entries?

Also, what options do you have selected in THGUARD?

Not that I can see.

>Also, what options do you have selected in THGUARD?

In the Settings window, all five options are checked. (Except that, as mentioned, Load on Startup unchecks itself when I restart - or in fact when I just unload and immediately re-run THGuard.)

Are you running under a user account that has full admininstrative privileges when you try to set the "Load on Startup" option?  If not, please try with an account that full admin privileges.

Are you running TrojanHunter V5.0.962?  And is it licensed with an active subscription?

Is Windows Defender active and running on your system along with Windows OneCare?  If so, please see the link below concerning startup programs.

http://malektips.com/windows_defender_0010.html

Also would you please download/install Hijackthis per the link below.  Then run a Hijackthis scan and post the scan log back here please.

Presumably. I.e. it's the default account on my laptop and I haven't altered the admin priviliges (not knowing how to).

>Are you running TrojanHunter V5.0.962?  And is it licensed with an active subscription?

Yes and yes.

>Is Windows Defender active and running on your system along with Windows OneCare?

No, I think it's off - in the Task Manager it's listed under the Services as Stopped.

Your Hijackthis log does not show any infections; however, there are some items that needed fixed.  It is also showing that Windows Defender is being started up hidden on reboot.  Please do the following:

1.  Run another Hijackthis scan.  When the scan is completed, place a checkmark in the box next to the following items.  BE SURE that these are the only items checked.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Defender] %ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe -hide

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Programs\PartyGaming.Net\PartyPokerNet\RunPF.exe (file missing)

O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\Programs\PartyGaming.Net\PartyPokerNet\RunPF.exe (file missing)

2.  Close your browser window to exit IE7

3.  Click on Fix Checked located at the bottom left of your Hijackthis window.  Confirm that you want HJT to fix these items and let it fix them.

4.  Close HiJackthis and immediately reboot your computer.

5.  After you reboot, try the THGuard setting to load on startup and see if it will stick.

IF it does not stick, then I am at a loss as to why your system will not let THGuard.exe load its startup registry key in your registry.

We can use the Task Scheduler to start THGuard.exe on computer startup if the above fails.   Follow the procedure below to set up THGuard in the Task Scheduler.

1.  Go to START>All Programs>Administrative Tools>Task Scheduler.  The Task Scheduler will open.

2.  In the top menu under "Action", select Create basic task.  The Create Basic Task Wizard window will open.

3.  In "Name" type in THGuard.exe

4.  In "Description" type in Start THGuard.exe from TrojanHunter on computer startup

5.  Click on Next

6.  In the Task Trigger window, bullet When the computer starts

7.  Click on Next

8.  In the Action window, bullet Start a program

9.  Click on Next

10. In the Start a Program window, click on Browse.

11.  Navigate to C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 5.0\THGuard.exe and select THGuard.exe.

12.  Click on Open to select THGuard.exe.  The following should now appear in the Program/script window.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\TrojanHunter 5.0\THGuard.exe"

13.  Click on Next

14.  In the Summary window, check mark Open the Properties dialog for this task when I click Finish

15.  Click on Finish.  The Properties window should now open and the General tab should be selected.

16.  On the General tab:

-  Bullet Run only when user is logged on

-  Bullet Run with highest privileges

-  The "Configure for:" box should show Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008

17.  Click on the Triggers tab

18.  Click on Edit

-  The "Begin the task:" box should show At startup

-  "Enabled" should be check marked.

19.  Click on OK and then OK to close the THGuard.exe properties window.

20.  Close the Task Scheduler

21.  Reboot your computer.

-  THGuard.exe should now start up and its icon be present in the Notification Tray next to the clock.

I tried the first procedure and it didn't work. Specifically, HijackThis produced two errors ('An unexpected error has occurred' or similar) after I clicked Fix Checked; I got the impression each of these was related to one of the problems and that it did fix the other problems, but TrojanHunter didn't load on restart subsequently. I haven't tried the second procedure yet (but will do).

My computer in recent days has been showing other odd signs of deterioration, e.g. I've started getting 'General failure' errors when clicking links in Outlook emails (which isn't fixed by a procedure I found on the web), and yesterday PDFCreator started throwing errors saying a component was missing. However I ran a Windows OneCare full virus scan and it didn't find anything. Any further suggestions, or are these probably unrelated problems?

It certainly sounds like you have something going astray on your system.  HiJackthis should be able to execute without problems on system.  Hopefully it is not a hardware problem that is making the system flakey.

I recommend that you run a check on your harddrive to see if it is okay.  Follow the procedure in the link below.

http://www.windows-help-central.com/windows-vista-chkdsk.html

Or here is another procedure.

1.  Go to Start and type in Search box   CMD.exe  CMD.exe will appear in the window.

2.  Right click on CMD.exe and select "Run as Administrator".  The Command prompt window will open.

3.  In the Command Prompt window, type in CHKDSK /r /f and press Enter on your keyboard.  (NOTE the space before /r and before /f )

4.  Command prompt will then tell you that the C: drive is busy and ask you if you want to run CHKDSK on the next reboot.  Type in Y or Yes and press Enter on your keyboard.

5.  The Command prompt window should then exit.  Immediately reboot your computer.

6.  As the system starts to reboot, a new window will appear that tells you that you have selected to run a disk check.  Let the disk check run to completion.

-  It will attempt to fix any disk errors it finds.

-  It will take quite awhile for this run depending on the size of your hard drive.

-  Once it has completed, it will display a summary and then boot on up.  Try to be present when the summary appears and visually note whether any errors were found and corrected.

After your system boots up, I recommend that you run an Online Remote Scan with BitDefender to check for infections.

1.  Temporarily disable your security programs except your firewall.

2.  Close down as many programs as you can (the icons in the task bar Notification Tray next to the clock)

3.  Using Internet Explorer, go to the link below and start a remote scan.

http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html

-  BitDefender will need to download an ActiveX component.  Please let it download/install the needed ActiveX and then the other necessary files.

-  BE SURE to scan your entire system.

4.  Once the Remote scan is completed, please post back here the BitDefender scan log.

I tried again running HijackThis as Administrator and it then worked and fixed the TH Guard problem.

I also then ran CHKDSK (don't know if it found any errors as I wasn't watching when it finished) and BitDefender (which didn't find any malware).

Thanks very much for your help!
