Access to TH Guard denied; can't update

Apologies if this has been answered before, but I'm a bit concerned: for a few days now, I've been unable to update TH, and have been getting an error message to say access is denied,  The other day, TH (I think it was TH) announced a keystroke logger had been found and would be quarantined; I've just been trying some of the fixes in the TH forums, and PC Tools Threatfire has announced that "THGuard.exe is attempting to manipulate, modify or tamper with another program on your computer" - I was given the options of Ignore or Quarantine, so chose the latter; now if I try to start up TH Guard, it can't be found.  I did briefly see a box (the one where settings for TH guard can be changed), and it suggested the program was unlicensed - but do have a license.    I don't know where to go now - I've scanned with AVG AntiMalware (paid version), Spybot, AdAware and SuperAntiSpyware, and nothing other than cookies has been found.  I'm running Windows XP SP2 (build 2600), fully patched as far as I  know.

Sorry if that's a bit hard to follow...  Thanks for any help you can offer.

You should have "Ignored" this alert by Threatfire.  Now THGuard cannot inject code into other programs in memory for its self protection.  Is there any way you can get into Threatfire and change this to "Ignore" for THGuard?

-  Do you have file License.tlf in folder C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 5.0 (I assume you have upgraded to V5.0)?

-  Are you sure your annual subscription has not expired?  If it has, then go to the link below which explains how to renew.

Thanks. It looks as if I should be able to change back the setting I altered with Threatfire (but the Threatfire window is being extremely slow to refresh...) .  I do have license.tlf in my TH 5.0 folder, and I'm sure the subscription must still be valid (that file is dated 7/7/07, if that's an indication).  I was able to update without any trouble until recently, but now if I try to update TH Guard, or open TH Guard again as I did just now, I get the message "Cannot open file "C:\Program Files\Trojan Hunter 5.0\RuleFiles\UpdateList.txt"".  Access is denied".

It sounds to me like Threatfire might also be blocking other parts of TrojanHunter.  Can you LiveUpdate through TH scanner GUI or through START>PROGRAMS>TROJANHUNTER?

Get Threatfire cleared of blocking components of TrojanHunter (THGuard.exe, TrojanHunter.exe, LiveUpdate.exe) and things may or should straighten out for you.

Also try this:

Please try forcing a complete download of the updates (rulesets and program revisions)

1.  Unload THGuard.exe from memory.  Be sure TrojanHunter scanner is closed down.

2.  Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the RuleFiles folder at C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 5.0\RuleFiles and open the folder.

3.  Delete file  UpdateList.txt

4.  Close Windows Explorer

5.  Go to START>Programs>TrojanHunter and run LiveUpdate.

LiveUpdate will download a complete RuleSets plus UnUpx.dll, THGuard.exe and TrojanHunter.exe

6.  Restart THGuard.exe

7.  TrojanHunter.exe should now be Build 962

Are things back to normal now?

Additional Information:

I installed ThreatFire on my Vista Business system.  When I turned on THGuard.exe's self protection, ThreatFire alerted.  I instructed ThreatFire to Allow-Always Remember.  THGuard.exe works okay after this.  LiveUpdate and TH scanner GUI works okay as well.

Thanks.  I was quite worried yesterday evening, as the PC became effectively unusable (couldn't even power it down via the start menu, and in the end I had to pull out the power lead....  I was thinking I might have to do a re-install).  I've switched it on this evening, noticed that TH Guard was enabled, and was able to run a live update.  I'm now on Build 962, and a scan by TH has so far found nothing wrong.  Maybe Threatfire was causing problems, as you suggest.  It's all very curious - I'll keep an eye on things, anyway.

Apologies for returning to this again, but Threatfire has flashed up an alert saying that Trojan Hunter.exe is logging keystrokes.  This is presumably nonsense(?), but I thought I ought to let you know, anyway.  All my scans continue to be clean, barring the odd cookie or two.  TH Guard was disabled by default again just now, but I can change that setting manually.  There are a few other intermittent niggles, as well, such as the email scanner in my AVG program being off until I restarted the machine, and some files apparently having disappeared from one of my E-Music folders.  Maybe I should reformat and start again....

It sounds like ThreatFire is causing you more problems than you should have to put up with.  TrojanHunter definitely is not doing anything malicious that should trigger ThreatFire's response.  I don't know why TreatFire would say it is logging key strokes.

You might consider searching for an alternative to ThreatFire.  Or get with the ThreatFire Technical support and work things through such that it is not adversely impacting your system.

I removed ThreatFire from my system because it was randomly locking out web pages and noticeably slowed down response time on various programs...including IE7.  This is on Vista.

Thanks. I uninstalled Threatfire yesterday evening; this morning, I switched on the PC, and I got the error message 'Cannot open file "C:\Program Files\Trojan Hunter 5.0\RuleFiles\G20071015_1518.trf".  The system cannot find the file specified"'.

The TH Guard icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen has a  red cross over it, and right-clicking on it doesn't give me any options.

Just noticed that the above file is in my TrojanHunter 5.0 folder.  Should I copy it over?

I recommend that you repeat this:

Is everything okay now?
