hijacker preventing access to antivirus/malware

I keep an eye on a friend's PC and when it crashed recently I had a look at it. AVG antivirus found 73 nasties, 71 of which it was able to deal with. Spybot also found 5 or 6, Ad-Aware found nothing nor did AVG anti-malware. Although the PC behaves for a few days something nasty re-emerges (although I've switched of System Restore)and prevents access to outlook express and all antivirus products. The only way I'm able regain access to these is by using Ewidos online scanner. Amongst the names I've noticed are Spysheriff, Zlob and hijacker. Any ideas as to what's causing this and how I could fix this?

I hate to sound negative but your friend's PC sounds like it was so compromised {infected} that a reformat may be the best solution.  You could save all data such as emails etc, that can be saved - you could save it to an external USB drive or something - then reformat and start over.
 
Before you take such a drastic step you might want to get input from our siliconman01, as he is very good with spyware and cleaning PCs from various infections.
 
There are also other places such as spywareinfo.com and castlecops.com which offer help with spyware and HJT analysis.  Good Luck.  Smiley

Sorry that I missed this post and have not responded earlier.
 
Let's take a look at the computer system and see if we can fix it up so that it is more secure.
