Warning: "No detection rules loaded ..."
« on: May 23rd, 2005, 3:02am »
Quote Quote  Modify Modify

Hello,

I have been receiving this following error message after a LiveUpdate:

TrojanHunter Guard Warning:

No detection rules loaded.  TrojanHunter Guard does not provide any protection without any loaded rules.  Please verify that TrojanHunter is installed correctly and/or contact technical support at support@trojanhunter.com

I have uninstalled and reinstalled TrojanHunter several times over the past month and verified that I have the latest version (v4.2, Build 908) installed.  I searched the TrojanHunter forum for a possible solution, but I didn’t find any relevant postings about this problem.  If you would be so kind as to provide with any guidance as to how I should proceed, I would greatly appreciate it.  Thanks for your help.

Regards,

Jennifer Lee

Welcome to the forum jenniferclee   Cheesy

Did you copy the License.dat file into the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2 folder and does your THGuard show that you are a licensed user?

If you have lost your License.dat file go to

http://www.misec.net/faq/#reinstalling

and have a new License.dat file emailed to you.

Thank you for the warm welcome and your quick reply, Siliconman.  Smiley

I have confirmed that the License.dat file is in the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2 folder and that my THGuard shows that I am a licensed user.

After I unload THGuard and reload it, I am also able to run the THScanner without any problems.  When I click on the Trojans Icon on the left side panel in THScanner, it shows that I am using "update 4xx-2005-5-22, containing 30968 ruleset entries."

If you would let me know how I should proceed, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!

It seems that the LiveUpdate does occur when it is initiated because you have the latest definitions.

1.)  What Windows system are you running (98/ME/XP)?

2.)  Are you running the LiveUpdate under an account that has full administrative privileges?

3.)  Does this happen if you:
-  run LiveUpdate from TH scanner
-  run it from the right click menu option of THGuard
-  select a specific time of day for the LiveUpdate on the settings window of THGuard?

In other words, do you get this error no matter how LiveUpdate is initiated?

Quote:
After I unload THGuard and reload it, I am also able to run the THScanner without any problems.

I assume this means that after you get the error, you can unload THGuard, reload it, and you do not get the error from THGuard again until the next LiveUpdate.  Correct?

Note:  For testing purposes, you can force a redownload of the definitions at any time.  To do this:

1.  Open Notepad
2.  Under File, select Open
3.  Navigate to C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2 and open file "thupdate.txt"
4.  Change the date of the last download to an earlier date, such as 4xx-2005-05-21
5.  Save
6.  Exit Notepad
7.  Run TrojanHunter LiveUpdate

1.)  What Windows system are you running (98/ME/XP)?
Answer: XP.  I also have ZoneAlarm firewall installed and confirmed that LiveUpdate is included in the program list and has permission to access the internet.

2.)  Are you running the LiveUpdate under an account that has full administrative privileges?
 Answer: Yes

3.)  Does this happen if you:
-  a) run LiveUpdate from TH scanner
-  b)  run it from the right click menu option of THGuard
-  c) select a specific time of day for the LiveUpdate on the settings window of THGuard?
 Answer: B & C.  I haven't tried running LiveUpdate from THScanner.

In other words, do you get this error no matter how LiveUpdate is initiated?
Answer:  Yes, it appears that way.

Answer: Yes.  That's exactly what I have been doing for more than a month now.  I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times, but the problem keeps on recurring. Sad

I appreciate your taking the time to help me troubleshoot this problem.  Thanks again for your help!  Cheesy

Hmmm...this is a most unique failure.  I don't recall seeing it mentioned previously by any users.

If you don't mind, let's try the obvious one more time using the following procedure.

1.  Download a fresh copy of TH 4.2 Build 908.  Just click on the Download Now link above.  Save it to your desktop or to a folder on your hard drive.  Do not RUN the installer.

2.  Create a new System Restore point just for safety purposes.

3.  Sign off your ISP.

4.  Save a copy of your License.Dat file somewhere so you can restore it later in this procedure.

5.  Unload THGuard.  Be sure there is no TH icon in the lower right Systray.

6.  If you have ProcessGuard, uncheck "Protection Enabled".

7.  If you have AdAware's Ad-Watch, open the Ad-Watch settings window to the Options page.  Disable "Lock Startup Sections" and "Automatic".

8.  Using Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel, remove TrojanHunter 4.2.

9.  REBOOT your computer.  Be sure to logon with an account that has full adminstrative privileges.

10.  After you are rebooted, shut down all programs in the lower right Systray.

11.  Disable your antivirus scanner.

12.  Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2 folder.  Delete this folder.

13.  Delete any other TrojanHunter folders that are left over from previous versions.

13a.  Now let's do some cleanup of temporary files just to ensure that no conflicts will occur during the installation.
-  Delete all files from the C:\Windows\Temp folder.  DO NOT delete the C:\Windows\Temp folder itself.  Any subfolders inside the Temp folder can be deleted.
-  Delete all files from the C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Temp folder.  Note: UserName is your account name.  There will be a Temp folder for each UserName account on your system.  Clean the Temp folder for each UserName.  DO NOT delete the Temp folder itself. Any subfolders inside the Temp folder can be deleted.

14.  Close Windows Explorer.

14a.  Go to START-SETTINGS-CONTROL PANEL-INTERNET OPTIONS-GENERAL tab.  Delete all temporary Internet files including the offline ones.

15.  Start the installation of TrojanHunter.

16.  Let the installer create a new C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2 folder as the installation folder by default.

17.  When the TH Installer asks if you want to download the latest definitions, respond NO.

18.  When the TH Installer gets to the Finish window, uncheck the box for Start TH Scanner.  Leave checked the box to Start TH Guard.  DO NOT click on Finish just yet.

19.  Open Windows Explorer and paste a copy of your License.Dat file into the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2 folder.  Close Windows Explorer.

20.  Click on Finish on TH Installer window.  The THGuard icon should now be in lower right Systray.

21.  Right click on the THGuard icon in the lower right systray and select Settings.

22.  Select your desired settings.  All are recommended.  However, you may not wish to have the automatic check for updates to occur at a specific time because of your Internet connect type.

23.  Click on OK to SAVE the THGuard settings.

24.  REBOOT your computer.

25.  Once you have rebooted, all your programs should be back up and running.
-  Be sure your antivirus program is active.
-  If you have ProcessGuard, re-enable protection.
-  If you have Ad-Watch, lock the startup sections and set Automatic On (assuming this is your desired settings).

26.  Sign on your ISP

27.  Right click on the THGuard icon in the lower right Systray and select Run LiveUpdate.  Once the update is downloaded, you should see a little RED box in the lower left corner of the THGuard icon.  This shows it is updating its definitions.  This box will disappear momentarily.

28.  Sign off your ISP

29.  Open TH Scanner and ensure you have downloaded the latest definitions set.  Set all of your desired Options for the TH Scanner.  Select the disk(s) you want scanned.  Do a FULL scan of your disk.  Hopefully you will scan clean.

AND hopefully the original problem is resolved.

Please post back as to whether all is well or we need to look deeper, deeper into this.  Wink

Thank you for your clear and detailed instructions.  I uninstalled and reinstalled TrojanHunter following the procedure this morning.  I also performed a full scan with the THScanner as you advised and was happy to find out that no trojans were found.

I haven't received any error messages so far and hope this thorough reinstallation has finally gotten rid of the pestering warning messages for good.  I will monitor the THGuard closely and will keep you posted of any developments.

Thanks again for your help!

are you running DCS's "processguard"? if so, maybe you have a rule set that is interfering with THGuard's functioning properly..

If the problem reoccurs, you can live with unloading and reloading the Guard to fix this glitch.  [I think I've had to do that on my son's 98SE-PC a couple times, to fix the same error message].  Let's hope it doesn't but if the warning message reoccurs, your next step is to, one by one, disable your other security apps until [hopefully] you find the conflict; I am wondering if WinPatrol Plus could be interfering.  You can also try disabling THSec.dll in Safe Mode [by renaming it to THSec.disabled], then rebooting into Normal Mode.  Let's hope you're all clear and won't have a reoccurrence. Wink

Very glad this problem appears to be resolved.   Smiley

For posterity, I am curious Jenniferclee about something.

Did you have other older versions of TH still on your system prior to going through the above removal/installation procedure?

The reason for my curiousity question is that I am "theorizing" what was happening is related to the Lock Startup Sections and Automatic security feature of AdAware's Ad-Watch.

My theory is that there was an older version of TH in another folder (example:  TrojanHunter 4.0 in C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.0) still on your system.  When the original upgrade to TH V4.2 was initiated, Ad-Watch would not permit the registry key removal of THGuard V4.0 or the addition of registry key Start of THGuard V4.2 because it was on blocking changes to this registry section.  So there was an older version of THGuard running in memory and trying to interface with the new V4.2 of TH's scanner and liveupdate.

Does this, in retrospect, sound plausible- Jenniferclee?   Huh

Hello Siliconman,

Thanks again for your help.

>Did you have other older versions of TH still on your system prior to going through the above removal/installation procedure?
Answer: No.  I uninstalled TH v4.0 and deleted C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.0 a few weeks ago.

>The reason for my curiousity question is that I am "theorizing" what was happening is related to the Lock Startup Sections and Automatic security feature of AdAware's Ad-Watch.

Your theory seems logical and well thought-out, but I don't think it applies to my case as I had deactivated the Lock Startup feature several months ago when I found out that it was preventing me from eradicating a spyware from my system.  I ran into a similar scenario you described with the Lock Startup feature because Ad-Watch would not permit the registry key removal of a spyware and was blocking changes to the registry.  After that incident, I have had the Lock Startup and Automatic features turned off.

Since I am also curious as to find out what caused this problem, I appreciate your concern and efforts to troubleshoot this unique and complex case.   Thank you for all your help, Siliconman!

Hello Siliconman,

Answer: No, I uninstalled TH v4.0 when I installed TH v4.2 for the first time.  I deleted C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.0 when I first uninstalled and reinstalled TH v4.2 after receiving the first warning message several weeks ago.

I have had the Lock Startup and Automatic features turned off since that incident.

The important thing is that you are now able to run a LiveUpdate without having to unload/reload THGuard.   Cheesy

Hello,

I am sad to report that I encountered the same error message today when I performed the LiveUpdate manually.  After I received the error message, there was a little RED box in the lower left corner of the THGuard icon showing that it was updating its definitions. After the RED box disappeared, a big RED "X" appeared on the THGuard icon indicating that it had been disabled.  After I unloaded and reloaded the THGuard, everything was back to normal again.  I guess I may have to live with this glitch for the time being ...  Sad

I would like to thank everyone for taking the time and trouble to help me.  I appreciate your concern and feedback.  If you have any advice or suggestions for me, please do not hesitate to let me know.  Thanks again for your help.
