Thguard CPU usage
« on: May 5th, 2005, 8:40am »

We're running an eval copy of Trojanhunter/THGuard on a Win2K server with 5 users in terminal services mode.

Currently, each instance of THGuard takes about 3-5MB RAM but CPU usage for each copy bursts up to around 20-80% every few seconds and so, overall, the THGuard processes take up most of the CPU's processing time slowing down the server.

Is this what you'd expect?

Thanks

No, that doesn't sound normal.  TH Guard normally uses such small CPU as to be not noticeable.  My experience has been on Windows XP [my box] and Windows 98SE [my son's box]. Wink  I don't have any experience running the Guard on a Server O.S. or in a corporate setting; maybe others can speak to this but your experience is quite abnormal I suspect; maybe a software conflict of some sort.  What other security software are you running on those machines?

THGuard.exe uses very little "cpu" on my computer.. (i am running the latest version of TH with win xpsp2) it may flunctuate a litte, depending on what programs i have running, but it is usually at about 2% cpu when it cycles..

I have purchased THGuard and haven't been able to use the 'guard' because of the same problem, about 80% cpu every few seconds. I did notice if I close ZoneAlarm Security Suite this drops to around 20% but I can get it no lower, even by closing everything else. I am running on XP SP2 with all software in their latest versions.

I hardly noticed the guard running in the background. However, it frequently happened that my not-so-new Windows ME computer wouldn't boot properly. This guard also made it sometimes difficult for my machine to shut down. That's the reason why I don't use the guard any longer.

Please don't get me wrong: I do like TrojanHunter, but it is impossible for me to use the integrated guard for the reasons stated above. Therefore, it is to be hoped that this guard will be improved in the not so distant future, so that all TH customers can use it without any problems at all. Just my 2 cents.

I see the spikes also of about 7 % CPU every 10 seconds. That is not a lot but the guard does use more CPU time than all of my other apps....

Alot depends on the number of processes you have sitting in memory and what the processes are.  I typically have 57-62 processes in memory routinely and see 10 second spikes from 7-11% on my XP-SP2, P4 (2.6 ghertz) system.

It's a bit easier to watch in Task Manager, Performance tab, if you set the update speed to HIGH under the View tab.

You are right, but a lot also depends on the operating system you are using. It seems to me that developers of software frequently ignore the fact that there are people out there who still use Win 9x/ME. Before a program is released, it should also be tested on such machines, something which is hardly done these days. Angry

I have TH Guard running on a fast XP-SP2 box and a slow 98SE box, neither of which are manifesting noticeable spikes.  On the slower 9x system [Windows 98 Second Edition], I did have to disable the THSec.dll longtime ago in order to avoid freezes -- maybe that could be causing the problem?

Hi Randy! Smiley

Yes, this dll file could be the reason for the freezes. I don't know. However, I'm using another AT Guard now, so the freezes are a thing of the past now. I only use TH every now and then to scan my files. Anyway, thanks for your help. Much appreciated, Randy. Cheesy

Sad  I was having same problem...also would like to add that I assume TH was causing a strange loud clinking noise every few minutes from my hard disk....that I never associated with TH.
I was worried I was getting ready for a hard disk crash and started looking for HD problems on other forums...found plenty of exact and similar postings with none relating to TH. as the possible cause.

I also was having a noticeable slow down surfing, sticking, lugging problem on my system and  with the clinking noise of the HD ,...I knew I had to find quickly what was causing this, before I had a HD crash.

After testing in vain for the problem, I figured it had to be a program running in the background causing this problem, and I removed TH (trial version) first from my system.

Walla... after removing TH all the above problems went away...

I hate to post this and it could be my unique situation , but I believe there is a serious problem with this software and there would have been a HD failure if I had not removed it. IMHO

I am posting my set-up below for reference and note the background programs were co-existing ok with no problems.

OS: Windows XP Pro sp2 (all updates applied)
Processor: 1.67 AMD Athlon XP
Main Circuit Board: KM 266-8233..133 megahertz
Bios: Phoenix 6.00 PG 05/08/62
Memory: 256 MB DDR Ram
HDD: Seagate ST380020A,rev3.9
   Smart Status: Healthy
Software: Avast ver 4.60 Home addition (virus scanner)
    Pest Patrol ver 4.4.4.81
    Spy Sweeper ver 3.5.0 (trial)
    Kerio Personal Firewall ver 2.1.4

Welcome to the forum lesride,,,  Cheesy

The problem you stated has not been described before on the forum...at least that I recall.  Very sorry that you have encountered it with the trial version of TH.  The trial version is basically the same as the release version...except that liveupdate does not function on the trial version.

In looking at your configuration, the only item that sticks out as a potential problem is the amount of DDR Ram you have- 256 mb.  You may be really taxing your system with this limited amount of RAM and XP Pro SP2.

I suspect you are getting a lot of Pagefiling or caching out to your hard drive.  The installation and execution of TH "may" have increased this caching activity for some reason.  You could test this by temporarily closing down a program such as Spy Sweeper and see if TH runs without causing your disk heads to seek rapidly.

At any rate, I suggest that you consider adding another 256 mb DDR Ram to your system if you can see your way clear.  Your system performance and speed would be noticably improved.

Sorry that I cannot give an absolute fix on this problem...it is not obvious at this time.   Wink
