Trojan Hunter Improvements

Improved Use of the NT Architecture
With an increasing number of uses, starting to use XP, it would be wise to take advantage of some of the cool features of the NT Architecture, like making THGuard a service, so it is always protecting uses, can access all files, bypassing NTFS security settings etc

Archive Support
Currently Trojan Hunter supports : zip and rar (I'm sure their are others, but this is all the settings show)

I would like to see this increased to support tar, 7-zip, ace etc at least for the on demand scanner

Runtime Packer Support
I would also like to see this department ramped up, as many variants, are simply old trojaned repacked.

User-Accounts
Currently Live update won't work with a user account, unless you fiddle with the directory permissions, this can be tricky for new pc users, who are trying to practice safe hex.  Several programs get around this by storing the definitions in the All Users section, this might be something to look at, or simply make the installer configure the permissions correctly

Spyware
With TH entering into the spyware arena, I would like to see some features incorperated to help tackle this plague.

1) Add Hijack Protection to THGuard (i.e. home page change, active x install et Al)

2) Protection of the hosts file

3) backup of I.E settings / recommend secure settings (?)

I hope you consider these ideas for the future releases of Trojan Hunter.

I do hope that TH will remain focused on Trojans and not become as many other softs a bloated software Sad

Jack of all trades master of none....

The use of additional detections, really doesn't effect the reliability of TrojanHunter.

However using multiple packing/unpacking schemes could really be a problem as the one you do not cover will be used and additionally any packed software will be detected as it is executed.  There is already fine software out there that protect versus hijacks, stores the host files, and gives protected settings.  Each of those actions would require significantly more code for implementation, creating both a larger application and require more memory reserved for the  process, slowing down scanning and limiting use on older computers.

It is enough to me for a program to do one thing well.  Now if that can be added to, without changes which degrade performance, then go for it.  Otherwise, we should look to other different solutions for other different problems.

I agree that Trojan Hunter, as its name suggests should focus on Trojan's.  I merely posted a list of areas where I believe TH can be improved.  Now the Spyware section is probably already covered by other programs, and not really needed.  But as Spyware and Trojans blend together, anti-trojan software must change to deal with these new blended threats, if adding these features significatnly improves the security of TH users, and don't affect reasource usage significantly then I don't see a reason to not included.

Again I'll stress that these are areas where I feel trojan hunter can improve, espicially if its going to also focus on spyware.

This may already exist within the program, But it would be nice if there was a way to make a rescue disk in case a trojan slips through.
