Hi Magnus,

Any way you could make the new messages indicator a different colour? The blue and the grey are a bit similar at SXGA (or whatever the name is for 1240x1024). How about red?

Also, is there any way of flagging the threads themselves with an indicator to show something has been added since the last visit to the site? Maybe YaBB won't allow these, but it would make things a little clearer.

Hi Ian,

Is this image more readable at your screen resolution:

  http://www.misec.net/yabbimages/new2.gif

If it is, let me know and I'll make the change in the forum to use the new icon.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean by "flagging the threads themselves"? Do you mean that if you're reloading a page with a thread there should be some sort of indicator if new messages have been added since the last time you viewed the page?

Alright, I've changed the board to use the new red messages indicator.

Hello,
Am I missing the concept to the new icon? It seems to mark all of the older topics two or three down in the list (or as inside the TrojanHunter board, the second page) as new if they are read or not. The newest topics are not flagged even when freshly posted, unless it doesn't detect your own posts.

Hm... the only thing that has changed is the background color of the image. Nothing else. So there shouldn't be any change in functionality of the board. I'm pretty sure you would have seen the same topics marked as new with the old icon.

I found out why I was asking silly questions. I think Cookie Wall must have ate my misec.net cookie...I should have figured it out when I had to loggin yesterday. I just wrote it off to having logged out for some reason. I marked all the boards as read and whuddy-whuddy everthing works great now. Grin

The red is much easier to see, thanks. Smiley I noticed the new one had gone live after Marti's approval, even though the link is now broken. Cool

I think the 'flagging the threads' thing has also been solved - you were right in your thoughts, but the new 'new' sign seems to work well enough. I dropped back to 'Home', then re-entered the Suggestion Box and the red tags were no longer there for the threads I've already viewed.

Since I tend to stay logged for a long time, it would be good if the 'new' indicator re-appeared when someone adds to a thread I've already viewed - maybe on a page refresh. I know that boards like Becky's Forum use a cookie to hold the updates and they have a 'Refresh indicators' option to update the displays to reflect new additions (or simply just a way of just dumping the lot back to 'read' - a quick way of resetting the message indicators on a big board like that one - I tend to go through everything on this Forum).

Maybe YaBB already did update the indicators already and I just never noticed it happening before!

I think something's amiss with the 'new' indicators on my PC...

Having raved about the way they work, I noticed that most of the messages in other forums here were flagged as 'new', including ones to which I've contributed (so have seen) that have been dormant for many moons now.

Now, I dump the cookies folder fairly regularly, along with all the other Internet stuff, via a DOS batch file (so it gets rid of the index.dat files too). I guess that this may have some bearing on the situation...

So far, I know what I've read this session because the thread titles go from blue to grey, but that will be reset back to blue for the next day's session (it survives a logout and login, even shutting down IE). I see some threads without the 'new' tag, but most with. I can use the 'mark as read' option at the foot of each forum to remove all red 'new' tags, but given that I read pretty much everything here, (or just skip in and out, which amounts to the same thing as far as the PC is concerned), most shouldn't be tagged for me.

Any way to have this work as follows:-
- 'New' red tags on threads with new messages since last viewing (on a page refresh, for example).
- No 'New' tags on threads read ages ago (may need a cookie or similar to survive in a different folder, or perhaps a record stored at the Forum end along with user details).
- Also, the top-level forum indicators - any chance the icon with the blue/grey circle in the corner could be modified to red/grey? Huh Grin

Just a thought.  Smiley
