Are you ready for the big launch of Windows 7 on 22-Oct-2009?

Just a word of caution:

Carefully evaluate/monitor your security programs, cleaner programs and registry cleaner programs once you rev up to Windows 7.  Although the program(s) may state that they are Windows 7 capatible, it is safe to say that we will be walking on new territory because of the thousands of existing combinations/configurations of hardware and software running around the globe.

Here is a very good Windows 7 forum with numerous tutorials.

Windows 7 feels Greaaaaaaaaat  Grin

Yesterday, I upgraded from Vista SP2 x64 Business to Windows 7 x64 Professional on my Dell XPS 410.  This computer has 8 gbytes RAM, an Intel 2.66 ghertz dual core processor and dual 10,000 rpm Western Digital VelociRaptor 300 gbyte hard drives.

The upgrade went very smoothly.  I had previously run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisory to ensure that the system hardware and software would pass okay for Windows 7.

I keep my system well maintained, so I decided to do an upgrade instead of a format/complete rebuild.  From what I had read, I planned for the upgrade to take several hours.  It took less than 1 hour...which really surprised and pleased me.

The only software problems I have encountered thus far are:

-  Avira Premium Security Suite V9 firewall drivers are not compatible with Win 7 x64 for some reason. I switched to NIS 2010 which appears to work very well.

Update on Avira:  Did a clean re-install of Avira Premium Security Suite V9 and it now works perfectly on Win 7.  Something in it did not properly transfer when I did the Win 7 upgrade.

-  PerfectDisk 10 Professional's offline defrag module is not compatible with Win 7 x64.

Update on PerfectDisk:  This turns out not to be a PerfectDisk problem.  The offline defrag issue is caused by having SuperAntispyware installed on the system.  Removing SAS allows PerfectDisk 10 offline defrag to function properly.

Update 2 on PerfectDisk:  Raxco has a registry patch for PerfectDisk on x64 systems that will permit the user to run SAS and also use offline defrag in PD.  See the link below:

TrojanHunter V5.2.988 appears to have the same compatibility as with Vista x64.  TrojanHunter Guard, LiveUpdate and the TH scanner work fine on Win 7 x64.

As a follow-up on Windows 7 upgrade, I am providing this information.

Even though my in-place upgrade from Vista SP2 x64 Business to Windows 7 x64 Professional was executed with minimal issues and my system and third party programs ran well, I decided to perform a format and clean installation of Windows 7.

What I discovered was that thousands of Vista files and registry entries were left over on the hard drive.  This was even after having Windows 7 delete its Windows.Old and other standard cleanup files.  I also, as routine, do not retain files in C:\SoftwareDistribution\Download and use CCleaner.    So these extra Vista files are left over in various system folders.  Plus I feel confident that many files were left hanging from various third party software uninstalls and upgrades over time.  It is not just a few files...it numbers in the thousands.

Therefore, I recommend a hard drive format and clean installation of Windows 7.  Obviously this means re-installing third party software and setting things back to your desired setting, all of which take time.  But, in my opinion, the time is well spent with the result being a cleaner hard drive, less time scanning with your various scanners, and other inherent performance advantages of obtaining/maintaining a clean system.
