Single sign on Technologies

these days im working on project for improving security inside the organization.specaily for SSO-Single sign on solution,but i have
some doubts about what r the exact technologies used in SSO solution.i had went through couple of white papers but i coudnt get the better idea about techonologies used in SSO.
Actually i realy want to knw abut any idea or explanation(article or anything relates to this) abut technologies used in sso.then i can do more research on those technologies,
