Are Children Safe On The Net

I got to admit I thought that kids websites were safe.  I have had a bad experience.  I am not going to mention the company involved but my nephew went on a childrens website and on there was a section to enter the e-mail address for a newsletter.  My nephew asked if he could have his e-mail address.  (he is under 10).
 
I decided he was too young to monitor his own e-mail address and I am so glad I did.  Within a week he had received 4 e-mails.

(can not remember the last one)
 
I contacted this company involved and they admitted on the phone that a marketing company they deal with sold the e-mail addresses by accident.
 
How can we ever allow kids to get on with thir own life when people like this do these kind of things.
 
To cut a long story short.  In the end there were all sorts of e-mails coming through including images of an illegal nature which I will not go into.
 
How can these companies get away with it.  
 
I tried to trace anyone else who had been in this sort of situation but failed.  
 
It is a shame that we do our best for internet security and then the few idiots out there cause this problem.
 
I am still trying to sort this problem.  Stopped the illegal images coming through but in 1 year I have received ten thousand one hundred e-mails that were junk.
 
Why can people just grow up and stop this sort of stupid thing.
