In looking at your HJT log, you may be able to gain speed for system reboot by removing unnecessary programs from your startup list. I don't mean that the programs should be removed from your computer....just not started up on every system reboot. These are the 04 items in your Hijackthis scan log. You have limited RAM memory (512 kbytes), so you really need to keep the startup programs to a minimum to enhance performance. 1. SuperAntiSpyware: - If you are using SAS PRO, the First Chance Prevention option may be slowing you down. This is under the realtime protection tab. Uncheck the option "Scan on Startup". Check "Scan on Shutdown" and "Scan System Services". This will cause SAS PRO to perform its First Chance Prevention only at system shutdown which should be adequate. - If you are using the Free version of SAS, you have no Realtime Protection. Thus, there is no need to have SAS start up on system reboot. Under the General and Startup tab, uncheck "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts". This still lets you use SAS as a on-demand scanner when you want to scan your system. Always be sure to check for core+trace+program updates prior to running the SAS scan. 2. Adobe Acrobat Reader - If you only use Adobe Acrobat Reader to read an occasional PDF file on the Internet, consider replacing Adobe Acrobat Reader with the freebie program FoxitReader. This will save you 60-70 mbytes of disk space and FoxitReader works great on XP and Vista. http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php The freebie download site is at http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader_2/down_reader.htm 3. Java update checker jusched.exe - Java is updated only every 2-3 months normally. There is no need to have jusched.exe startup on every reboot. You can turn it off via Control Panel>Java>Update tab. Then every month, you can do a manual update check via the same control panel module. - NOTE: Every time you get a new version of Java, you need to repeat the above "turn off" of the update check option. - Freebie JavaRa is a great tool to use to check for Java updates plus it will also remove old versions of Java which get left behind on every Java update. http://www.misec.net/forum/board/FAQ/1216543051 4. RealPlayer - RealPlayer is notorious for security problems/bugs. However, if you are attached to RealPlayer, be sure that you are using the latest version so that you have its latest security fixes. - RealPlayer installs an update checker program named realsched.exe that starts up on every reboot. You should remove this pgm from startup. The link below provides info on how to disable it. http://www.pcreview.co.uk/startup/realsched.exe/TkBell.Exe.php 5. ATI Control Panel for your Graphics card - If you do not routinely use the ATI control panel, you can disable it from starting up. Instructions are provided in the link below. http://process.networktechs.com/atiptaxx.exe.php Another element that you should check is what system services you can disable or set to manual. Windows, by default, has many unnecessary services start up on system reboot. Here is a link that contains information and recommendations on system services. http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm NOTE: I recommend that you jot down any and all changes that you make to your system. This will give a written reference so that you can change back if you do not like the result of the change.
