Hi

You asked me to post a HJT log, following my post here.

I asked TH to delete a couple of data streams from the TEMP folder during the final scan, so am hoping this HJT log won't show anything too scary!

Looking forward to hearing back Smiley

Okay, I can see some problems in your Hijackthis log.  Please do the following:

1.  Run another HiJackthis scan

2.  When the scan is completed, place a checkmark next the to items below.  BE SURE that these are the only items checked.

F1 - win.ini: load=c:\01comm32\bin\01comm32.exe

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - (no file)

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0001-0002-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.1_02)

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0014-0002-0006-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.4.2_06)

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0015-0000-0010-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.5.0_10)

3.  Close any browser window(s).

4.  Click on Fix Checked at the lower left of the Hijackthis window.  Confirm that you want Hijackthis to FIX these items and let it fix them.

5.  After the fixing is completed, close Hijackthis and reboot.

Your JAVA plugin is out-of-date.  For security reasons you need to update to the latest Java.

A.  Go to the link below and download/install the latest Java plugin.

http://www.java.com

B.  After the latest update is installed, go to the Control Panel>Add and Remove Programs.

C.  Uninstall all previous/older versions of the Java plugin.

D.  Reboot your computer

Run a new Hijackthis scan and post the log back here please.

Okay, things are looking good.  There is one more bit of cleaning with Hijackthis that I would like you to do.

1.  Run a Hijackthis scan.

2.  When the scan is completed, checkmark the following items.

O16 - DPF: {30528230-99f7-4bb4-88d8-fa1d4f56a2ab} -

O16 - DPF: {4E62C4DE-627D-4604-B157-4B7D6B09F02E} -

O16 - DPF: {9A9307A0-7DA4-4DAF-B042-5009F29E09E1} -

O16 - DPF: {9F1C11AA-197B-4942-BA54-47A8489BB47F} -

O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0000-ABCDEFFEDCBA} -

3.  Close all browser windows

4.  Click on Fix Checked and confirm that you want these fixed.

5.  After the fix is completed, close the HJT window and reboot.

It might be a good idea to run a Remote Scan with Kaspersky anti-virus just to cross check things.  The link below provides the remote scanner of Kaspersky.

http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

-  It needs to download an ActiveX control and also the data base.  Please let it do so.

-  Before you start the remote scan of your entire system, be sure to disable your McAfee antivirus scanner so that it does not conflict.

-  Be sure to scan your full system.  The scan may take awhile depending on how large your total number of files are.

-  If Kaspersky finds anything and you need assistance on it, please post the Kaspersky scan log so that I can see what it is seeing.

After I'd left Kapersky running overnight, it had determined its expected finish time as 13:23, 25th December Undecided

I cut it down to a 'critical areas' scan and "ta-da" learned how to read my own Hijack This log file, which seemed OK. But my USB ports still aren't working ... am going to try Trend Micro's online scanner, as it's a bit quicker Wink

Thanks again .... Kiss

Concerning your USB ports, please go to the Control Panel and select Device Manager.  Do any of the devices have a yellow triangle or red circle on them showing that they are not functional?  Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controller and see if any are showing non-functional.

Go over to the Kaspersky User forum at the link below and discuss this issue over there.  They will help you sort out what setting changes in Kaspersky that you need to make to correct this slow scanning.

You're working hard enough already - didn't want you to have to post everything twice!

Device Manager shows the devices currently connected to USB. However, if I plug one of them into the hub that doesn't work, it doesn't show. System Information reports no problem devices (well, there is one, but that's a disconnected network cable).
I'm seeing all 3 hubs in Device Manager. Is it possible one of them has lost its power or something  Huh
Exciting picture of my Device Manager.

Excellent! It's scanning now, and looks like finishing well before Christmas Cool

That is very possible.  Is your computer under service contract with the manufacturer?  It might be best to call them and let them troubleshoot it with you.

Are you sure??!  Kaspersky reports 3 viruses, which all turn out to be "Not-A-Virus"s and I can't find any info on them. However, McAfee keeps reporting it can't remove a "Joke-Snowman" so I imagine that's related. Must that flaming porn attack!  Angry
Luckily I don't have a dial-up connection. But, obviously, I would like to get rid of it/them.

Kaspersky reports a whole load of skipped items, too - "Object is locked".

Re: USBs:-  This computer went out of warranty years ago, bless it! I guess, if removing my malware doesn't fix the problem, I'll just have to accept it as a sign of ageing ...

Later ....

BBDesktopHelpInstall is part of BT Broadband's helper app, which I have just removed.

MyWebSearch is some browser helper thingy, which may have seemed like a good idea at the time  Roll Eyes

And AdTool.Win32 is part of MyWebSearch, though I still don't like the look of its location.

I'm busy shredding the recycle contents & earlier restore points - hopefully a new scan will reveal nothing new!

However, McAfee keeps reporting it can't remove a "Joke-Snowman" so I imagine that's related.

Does McAfee state what file(s) it is trying to clean?  Check the Removal instructions at this link.

Concerning your USB port problem-

One thing you should check is if your computer manufacturer has a newer BIOS update than you have on your computer.  This update should be posted under support or downloads on the website of your computer manufacturer.  BE SURE that any update you get is specifically for your make and model computer.  Instructions on how to install the new BIOS should be provided on the website as well.

What brand/model computer do you have?

Another thing to try is to force Windows XP to re-install the USB drivers.  To do this:

-  Unplug all your USB devices except the keyboard and/or mouse
-  Go to Control Panel>Device Manager
-  Expand "Universal Serial Bus Controllers"
-  Uninstall the drivers labeled "Standard Universal PCI to USB Host Controller" or "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller"
-  Reboot
-  Plug back in the USB devices

Windows XP will re-install the drivers.

Note:  If you have a USB keyboard or mouse, you may "lock up" when/if you uninstall one of the above.  Don't Panic.  Just power reboot and it will re-install these.

My system seems lovely & clean now  Grin

Sadly, my BIOS hasn't been upgraded but it was great to learn how much easier (and safer) doing it has become since I last checked.

Thanks again for all the brilliant advice, Siliconman.
