video files missing in temp folder
« on: Jun 22nd, 2007, 5:10am »

Hello!

When I reboot my computer, all the video files are missing from the Temp folder.

(I don't wanna save them an other place. I will get rid of the file that, obviously,
has taken over control of the folder. Smiley

Thank you,
Steve

Any file that is stored in the Temp folder is considered to be temporary itself and volatile.  Do you have a cleaning program such as CCleaner or Window Washer that is configured to run on system reboot or shutdown?  If so, it is probably cleaning up all temp folders at that time.

Hello siliconman01!

Thanks for your reply. No, I don't have those installed. Windows was not programmed and can not be set to delete temp files itself right?

Typically, that is correct.  However there are some procedures that can be added to Windows boot.ini that will clear out the C:\Windows\Temp folder on reboot.  These would have to have been manually installed on your system by you or another user of your system.

I suggest that you create a special "Video Temp" folder and store your videos in them.  Filling up the C:\Windows\Temp folder will significantly reduce the performance of Windows itself.  For best performance, it is recommended that the C:\Windows\Temp folder be cleaned out every so often.

Therefore I'm the only one using this computer I don't think that has happened.

I know it's best to simply store the files in an other folder, but want to clean off
whatever causes that.

I don't know of anything malicious that deletes files in the Temp folder as part of its attack.

I suggest that you follow the steps in the procedure at the link below to see if anything malicious can be found on your system.  Please post the logs at the end of the procedure and we'll examine them to see whether everything is okay.

You can uncheck the box in CCleaner that cleans cookies.  Or you can instruct it which cookies to keep (under Options in CCleaner).  There might be some tracking cookies that get removed by SuperAntispyware or BitDefender.  But that is what you want to happen.  Wink

If you prefer, you could run a remote scan with Kaspersky and it will show you if you are infected with anything.  It will not remove anything; however, it will provide a reliable picture as to whether or not your system is infected.

BE SURE to disable other security programs (except your firewall) when running the remote scan.  You need to access the website with Internet Explorer because Kaspersky requires an ActiveX download in order to run the remote scan.

The Kaspersky ActiveX didn't install. I allowed cookies for the site and did add
to the trusted sites zone.

Please try again a bit later this morning.  It is possible that their website is swamped.

I just tried it on my Vista Home Premium system.  The ActiveX installs; however, I get a DEP shutdown of Internet Explorer 7.  I don't know if this is a Vista compatibility problem or not.  I do know that it always worked on Windows XP; however, I don't have XP anymore to try it.

Did you get the alert bar at the top of your IE page asking for permission to download/install the ActiveX?

Yes. I clicked on it several times. The next prompt asking for the ActiveX to install was never popping up.
