spyware will popup even when your browser is not open......also if your homepage changes, you may have been hijacked

If pop-ups happen even though you're not browsing anywhere, then it's probably a source of adware.  Other signs of adware would be getting massive amounts of popups at once, or getting popups at sites that never had them prior, and are expected to not have them now.
 
If you want someone to look over some common infection points for adware, you can post a HijackThis log for review.  From that, we can locate possible files that warrant review.

I've been using adwaresafe as well as adaware to scan my system, I had pop ups when I wasn't on the internet as well though...
