Live Update and Scan - fully automatic??? How???

Hi, i have the newest version, TH5, and I have suceeded in installing update and scan automatic, or so I thought. Now the update and scan-windows pop up automatically, as sceduled, but it is not more automatic than the fact that I have to press the button myself to start the udate as well as the scan. So much for automatic, right  Wink ?
Now I have gotten this suggestion from your supportteam; and I quote:

"For LiveUpdate you can use the /auto parameter to automate the update.
For the scanner use /fullscan /autoclose to achieve the same effect."

Now my question is only, where do I put these parameters? as i expect that they have to be filled in, somewhere. Only I cannot find where, so please help !

thanks

Hi again

well.... all this I already have marked and checked and done. That is why I am writing to you. In windows I have also allowed TH in Scheduled Tasks in Control Panel. After that it at least started to pop up at the scheduled time, but without starting - just waiting for me to press the button.
That is when I got the reply from your TH helpdesk about the parameters, as i quoted:

"For LiveUpdate you can use the /auto parameter to automate the update.
For the scanner use /fullscan /autoclose to achieve the same effect."

I just do not get any reply, when I ask them what exactly to do with those parameters, where to put them, and so on.

(When you say that it runs "silently", what does that mean? that I will not see it on the computer? - because i don't  Wink - or just that it will run without needing my interferrence?)

thanks

Silently means that it "should" be running without any human interference...which is not what you are experiencing.

Are you running the Trial version of TH or a Licensed version?

Let's try to correct this problem for you.  I am assuming that you are running Windows XP.

For LiveUpdate:

1.  Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Scheduled Tasks to open the Windows Task Scheduler.

2.  In the Task Scheduler, right click on the entry named TrojanHunter LiveUpdate.  Select Properties from the pop up menu.

3.  On the Task tab, in the Run box, you should have the following entry...exactly as shown below.

"C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 5.0\Tools\LiveUpdate\LiveUpdate.exe" /auto /hide

(Note that there is a space before /auto and a space before /hide.)

4.  On the Task tab,

-  Uncheck "Run only if logged on"
-  Check mark "Enabled (scheduled task runs at specified time)

5.  If you make any changes, click on Apply and OK.

Note 1:

-  The /auto command is to make LiveUpdate run automatically at the scheduled time.

-  The /hide command is to make LiveUpdate run silently without showing the LiveUpdate window.

Note 2:

If, when you open the Task Scheduler, you find more than one entry for TrojanHunter LiveUpdate, delete all the TrojanHunter LiveUpdate entries from the Task Scheduler.  Then go back into the Schedule option of TrojanHunter GUI and set up a new schedule.

Note 3:

If, when you click on Apply and OK, the Task Scheduler asks for a password, the password it needs is your User Account sign-on password.

If you do not have a password assigned to your User account, checkmark "Run only if logged on" at the bottom of the Task tab.  This should negate the Task Scheduler from asking you for a password.

For Scheduled Scan:

1.  Go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Scheduled Tasks to open the Windows Task Scheduler.

2.  In the Task Scheduler, right click on the entry named TrojanHunter Scanner.  Select Properties from the pop up menu.

3.  On the Task tab, in the Run box, you should have the following entry...exactly as shown below.

"C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 5.0\thcl.exe" /fullscan

(Note that there is a space before /fullscan.)

4.  On the Task tab,

-  Uncheck "Run only if logged on"
-  Check mark "Enabled (scheduled task runs at specified time)

5.  If you make any changes, click on Apply and OK.

NOTE:  When the scheduled scan starts running, you will see the process named thcl.exe running in memory.  You can view this by opening the Windows Task Manager.  Unfortunately there is no other visible indication that the scan is running.

Magnus is working on changing this in the next version to show an icon in the Notification tray when thcl.exe is scanning.

Note also:

If you manually initiate LiveUpdate via the right click option of THGuard.exe or from within TrojanHunter GUI, they do not run silently.  They both require that you click on Next.

Hullo there

and thank you, now it works  Cheesy

...only, the automatic scan doesn't run smoothly, when it pops up. The magnifying glass is going in circles, but very unevenly, and although it runs, it keeps showing Objects scanned:0

So, what I have to do anyway is to stop the scan, and start it manually. Then it goes smoothly, and begins to show the number of Objects scanned.
Is there a way to adjust this, so that the scan will run smoothly automatically?

thanks

When you say "automatic scan", are you referring to the Scheduled Scan?

You should not even be seeing a window opening when the Scheduled scan runs.  You are not clicking on the TH Scanner GUI icon and opening TrojanHunter scanner during the time the scheduled scan is running, are you?

GUI stands for "Graphical User Interface".  It was the window you see on your monitor when you open a program.

The TrojanHunter scanner GUI is seen by doubling clicking on the TrojanHunter icon and its main window opens to permit you to manually scan your computer.

Very glad you found the problem and all is working now.   Smiley

aha, so that's what the GUI is Smiley

Now, my last quiestion only is:

if the Scheduled scan should find any trojans while scanning, hidden in the background, where I don't see it - how does it decide what to do with them? Can I be sure that it deletes and cleans them out?

How did you set up the Scheduled Scan?  By this, I mean did you go into the system Task Scheduler and manually set it up?

Or did you open the TrojanHunter GUI and click on the "Schedule" icon and set it up through that?

IF you manually set it up through the Task Scheduler, the following will happen if/when a trojan is found:

The scheduled scan will run to completion.  It will then throw up an Alert message that tells you that it found 1 or more malicious items that need your attention.  You then have to open the TH GUI and manually scan again.  At the end of this scan, you manually instruct TH to clean/quarantine the malicious item.

If you opened the TrojanHunter GUI and clicked on the "Schedule" icon and set it up through this option, the following will happen:

If, when you set up the scheduled scan, you checkmarked "Automatically clean trojans found during the scheduled scans", the malicious items will be automatically removed during the scheduled scan.

If, when you set up the scheduled scan, you did not checkmark "Automatically clean trojans found during the scheduled scans", the scheduled scan will run to completion.  It will then throw up an Alert message that tells you that it found 1 or more malicious items that need your attention.  You then have to open the TH GUI and manually scan again.  At the end of this scan, you manually instruct TH to clean/quarantine the malicious item.

So, another little funny feature has come up  Undecided

When the Scheduled Scanner begins, supposedly hidden, a window pops up, ...not the GUI, but the DOS window, showing all the processes that are running at the moment.... now what is that all about, that's not right, is it?
I have controlled the parameters and they are written in the Run box exactly as you told me to write them and I haven't changed anything in TH the last couple of days, .....so .....heeelp

From your Task Scheduler, please tell me exactly what you have in the RUN box and Start in box on the Task tab.

Also is the Windows User account that you are using an Administrator account or a Limited User account?

Are you running Vista or XP?

"C:\Programmer\TrojanHunter 5.0\thcl.exe" /fullscan

And in the Start in box :

"C:\Programmer\TrojanHunter 5.0"

The Windows user account I am using is an Administrator account with a password.

melba,

Are you running Windows Vista or Windows XP?

If you are running XP, please tell me what is in the Run as box on the Task tab of the Task Scheduler.  Is it

NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM

If you are running Vista, on the General Tab of the Task Scheduler, please make sure that Configure for: is set to

Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, or Windows 2000

This would apply to both the scheduled scan and LiveUpdate entries of TrojanHunter in the Task Scheduler
