Live Update problem
« on: Feb 8th, 2007, 11:40am »

I have just updated TH from v 4.5 to v 4.6. In my administrative account TH works fine, but in my Limited User Account (LUA) live update does not work.

In the LUA when I attempt to update I get the error message "unable to write to Settings.ini". If I continue to try to update the 2nd error message I get is "Cannot create file UpdateList.txt. Access is denied".

I did not have any problems in v 4.5.

Welcome to the forum Bobcat  Cheesy

Sorry that you are having problems getting V4.6.930 to update in a limited account environment.  It sounds like something did not uninstall or install properly.

Please completely uninstall TH and re-install V4.9.30.  Follow the procedure in the link below to uninstall TH.  Please be sure that there are no folders for TrojanHunter (any version) left in the C:\Program Files folder when you are finished uninstalling TH.

Thanks Siliconman01,

When I uninstalled TH before I checked to make sure THGuard was shut down from the system tray. This time I also checked in Task Manager and it was still there. I got rid of it in the Task Manager, uninstalled TH, rebooted, and then deleted what was left in the TH folder. Then reinstalled TG. Update is working A-ok in the LUA now.
Again Thanks much,

I'm having the exact same problem, and have tried the uninstall and reinstall described in this forum with no resolution.  Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum markdizik  Cheesy

Are you running TH Version 4.6 Build 930, the latest version of TH?

What Windows system are you using (with service pack #)?

I'm running 4.6 930 on a machine with Windows XP professional.  Service pack 2 with all of the MS patches.

Thanks for the help.

Hmmm,  Huh

I understand this probably sounds like an annoying repeat exercise; however, would you please try it to see if it resolves the issue.  When doing the exercise below, ENSURE that you are signed on using an Administrator account.

0.  BE SURE that you have your License.tlf file saved away to a SAFE location....on a CD or floppy or a non-TrojanHunter folder on your hard drive(s).

1.  Double click on the THGuard icon in the Systray to open the THGuard settings window.

2.  Uncheck ALL the settings and click on OK to save the settings.

3.  Unload THGuard.

4.  Reboot your computer.

5.  On reboot, the THGuard icon should NOT appear in the Systray.

6.  Using Add or Remove Programs in the control program, uninstall TrojanHunter again.

7.  Reboot your computer after the uninstall is completed.

8.  Do a Search of your hard drive for the word  TrojanHunter

9.  Delete any FOLDER with the name TrojanHunter.

10.  Go to START>RUN and type in   msconfig

11.  Click on OK to open msconfig

12.  Go to the Startup tab and scan down through the list of startup programs to ensure that there are no TrojanHunter entries remaining in the list of startup programs.

13.  Then re-install TrojanHunter V4.6.930.

14.  Install your License.tlf file back into the folder at C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.6.

15.  Reboot your computer once more.

16.  Set up the desired settings in THGuard.

17.  Set up the desired settings in TH Scanner.

Does LiveUpdate now work on your LUA?

Okay,
third time is the charm.
I tried this twice with no success.  The the third time I did something slightly different.  The first two times I 'searched' only for 'files' that had the word trojanhunter in it and deleted them to no avail.  The third time I 'searched' for 'words' in addition to 'files' and found something in both the adminstrative as well as the user 'application data' directory.  I deleted these and it seems to work now.  Thanks very much.

Great!  Glad it is working.  Something apparently got left over from a previous version or uninstall.  Wink

Yep.  One thing I did notice that I thought I'd pass along was that although it works fine now in the XP built in 'guest' account, I now get a 'dwwin.exe failed to initialize...' error message on shutdown.  But, if I create a new limited user account (LUA), I don't get the shutdown error, but TrojanHuner update works fine.  Any ideas why this is happening?  Thanks again.

dwwin.exe is Dr. Watson trying to kick in.  I've emailed Magnus and requested that he provide insight here.  I'm not sure what the problem might be with the Guest Account.
