"Cannot create file" LU error
« on: Mar 26th, 2006, 1:28pm »
Quote Quote  Modify Modify   Remove Remove

After uninstalling TH 4.5 (a full clean uninstall) and re-installing, when I attempt to run LiveUpdate I get the message:

Cannot create file "C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.5\Tools\LiveUpdate\Temp\". The system cannot find the path specified

Any suggestions before I re-image the partition from 2 days ago? (System Restore is broken for other reasons.)

WinXP Home SP2 full patched.

Thanks

Are you running in some sort of limited account? If so, try creating the folder C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.5\Tools\LiveUpdate\Temp as Administrator and that should solve the problem.

Hi Magnus

I have the same issue. I am not running in a 'sort of limited user account' but an admin account.

I successfully installed the new v4.5 to replace v4.2

Unfortunately I am experiencing an update issue.

When doing a manual update I am told one is available...and I can get it to start downloading G20060322_0800.trf -

When the download appears to have finished I get an error message 'Cannot find the specified file "C:\Defence|TrojanHunter 4.5\Tools\LiveUpdate\Temp". The system cannot find the path specified

When I checked the install directory [which I haven't changed at all since the clean install of v4.5] I can clearly see that the path specified exists.

When I run the Update again this time with the ...\LiveUpdate\Temp directory window open I can see that the update is placed in the \Temp folder

But again I get the Update Error message as previously and exactly the same time the update file G20060322_0800.trf  dissappears out of the \Temp folder.

I'd be grateful of your assistance to solve this issue.

I am running Windows XP Home, fully updated, with what I believe to be a clean system [I run multi-layered security and I am not geeting the download flagged by these security softeware programs].

No, full admin. I had no trouble installing 4.5 (having removed 4.2). But then I wanted to reset all the options so thought it was simplest to do an uninstall and re-install (as has worked in the past).

FWIW, Sysinternals Filemon shows no problems in creating the directory (and I can see that the dir exists), but the error appears to coincide with Filemon showing "IS DIRECTORY" for "C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.5\Tools\LiveUpdate\Temp\".

namrehto,

It sounds like something has become scramble when you reinstalled V4.5 over V4.5.

I recommend that you start fresh following this procedure to uninstall V4.5

http://forum.misec.net/board/FAQ/1139255740

just to make sure you have a totally fresh start.

Then follow the procedure below to re-install V4.5.

What version of Windows are you using?  If it is Windows 98, 98se, or Windows ME, then there is known problem with LiveUpdate.  Magnus should be issuing a new build soon to correct this problem.

Hi Siliconman01

Version of XP was included in  my thread...it's XP Home.

To unintsall v4.2 I unloaded THG, then went to +/- progs and uninstalled from there, then used WinASO RegOptimizer and RegCleaner to clean up the regisytery, finisded off with CCleaner and deleted the TH files in C\Programs in safe mode as I wasn't able to delete them otherwise. Rebooted and installed THv4.5

Does unloading THGuard.exe and then manually doing a LiveUpdate make LiveUpdate work?

Just for info,

I am on XP-SP2 HE too.

I went into the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.5\RuleFiles folder and deleted:

UpdateList.txt
G20060322_0800.trf
Cumulative20060322.trf

and then ran a LiveUpdate from the USA server.  It downloaded and installed as it is supposed to.

I did have THGuard.exe unloaded at the time of this test.

Are y'all using Build 918 of TH V4.5?  And have you tried closing down all other programs including your AV...just to see if a possible conflict is occuring?

I am using Build 918 TH v4.5

I have just deleted the following as you did:

UpdateList.txt
G20060322_0800.trf
Cumulative20060322.trf

I obviously cannot load THG now as there is no RuleFile, but the THG icon is present in the Task Bar with the red 'X' through it.

A manual update to the Europe server is underway now...I will post back the results in a mo...I am on dialup

Well that's resulted in exactly the same error message.

I have discovered from catweasel's thread this information from Siliconman:-

http://forum.misec.net/board/LiveUpdate;action=display;num=1143139088;st art=30

Please do not use the "pick random site" option in LiveUpdate.  Select one server and keep using that server...Stay with USA or stay with Europe.

There is a synchronization problem between the USA server and the European.  Both issue the latest updates, but in a different order.  So when you switch from server to server, they are getting confused and you get a new download.

Magnus says this will be fixed "soon".

Stay with one specific server for now.

So, reverting to the server that I first used the update went through without issue. Seems like the issue is definately the  syncronization problem between the European and USA severs in my case.
