New Twist on Can't Update
« on: Feb 8th, 2006, 4:56pm »

Hi, I also get the error when updating regarding "rulesets.ini."

I found rulesets.ini @ c:\program files\trogan hybter 4.2\tools\live update\temp

First I tried changing the name to rulesets.inx, then re-tried to update, same error message & no success at update. When I looked a new rulesets.ini file was in place.

Second read posts here about rulesets.ini & "read only", next highlight rulesets.ini > right click > properties > in read only box. Still no luck updating.

Thanks
rico

PS Would a reboot be required?

Hi! Well reboot does not help! Re-checked rulesets.ini, still not ticked, read only.

Exact error message may help:

"Unable to move c:\program files\trojan hunter 4.2\tools\live update\temp\rulesets.ini to c:\program files\trojan hunter 4.2\tools\live update\temp\rulesets.ini
(cannot create a file when that file already exsists) unable to install update.

Thanks

Are you saying you can't remove the "readonly" attribute in that file? {rulesets.ini} - If so, I am wondering if you are logged on as Admin?  Could this be a permissions problem, where the O.S. is not allowing you to modify the attributes of that file?  HTH .. Wink

Hi Randy,

I've seen your posts over at wilders.

To answer your questions:

1. Exactly I'm saying the file "is NOT Read Only" or the little box is empty, no check mark.

2. Yes I am the admin.

3. No this is not a permissions problem...

This is a very recent problem with TH42. The problem did not exsist on Jan. 27, 2006. I believe it was the last two updates I tried, today's & the previous, which went south on me. Don't know if it means anything, but today I was successfull updating Ad-Aware.

Thanks

Hi Randy, Just to see if I could remember old dos, I tried:

run >cmd

attrib -R c:\program files\trojanhunter 4.2\tools\liveupdate\temp\rulesets.ini <enter>

Fingers crossed, tried updating TH - no luck!

What happened? I thought yesterday was supposed to be "patch tuesday" from M$

Hi Randy,

I downloaded TH42 build 908 > uninstalled > finished removing folders, in safe mode > reboot > regseeker > install build 908 > 908 asked if i would like to download updates > SUCCESS > entered my license code > SUCCESS.

Randy what i forgot to do was look at the options I had checked before un-install. Do you know of any threads etc. regarding configuring options?

Thanks
rico

PS looking fwd to ver. 5!

Under the OPTIONS icon in TH scanner-

For the most efficient detection/scanning/removal, check mark all options in the list.

Note:  You may wish to uncheck the option to log double extensions if you have a lot and if seeing them each scan annoys you.

Under the SCAN icon in TH scanner-

1.  Select the disks that you want scanned during a FULL scan.

In THGuard-

All options are recommended.  If you have dial-up, then you most likely will not wish to use the scheduling option for LiveUpdate.

Looks like siliciconman answered your questions.  I have always enabled all the options for TH Guard.  For a full scan, most people nowadays have their program files on the C: drive.  You need not scan data partitions because those are not what get infected; [I think] it is files that contain code, i.e.  executable files {.DLL, .EXE, .SCR, .BAT, .VBS, etc.} that are used to infect your PC.
