Error Message 'unable to move....'
« on: Sep 20th, 2005, 1:54pm »

Autoupdate report the following weird error:

"Unable to move D:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2\LiveUpdate\Temp\AprocessRules.trf to D:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 4.2\LiveUpdate\AprocessRules.trf (Cannot create a file when that file already exist). Unable to install update"

It has only happened twice in almost 10 months of use...

Any ideas??

fax2368,

I don't have a solution, but have experienced the same error with the file Rulesets.ini for the last several (manual) updates.

The second (manual) update attempt succeeds, reason unknown.

What O.S. ??  I have not experienced this problem on my Windows XP-SP2 computer but on my son's Win98SE computer I have noticed a similar error:  exiting {unload} and reloading the TH-Guard, then rerun liveupdate, seems to solve the problem on his PC.  Wink

Windows XP-Pro-SP2

In my case a manual update after the autoupdate error (without unloading) correctly downaload and install the definition update.

I've been unable to reproduce this error. This error message should really only happen if a file is already being written to, e.g. if two LiveUpdate instances were to run at once.

Thanks Magnus for the feedback and for checking it out. As I said it only happened twice in 10 months and it does not affect the functionality of TH.

Last time it happened the PC was in screensaver mode. But I am not sure how can the screensaver (normal starfield one) have an influence on this error. I will try to replicate the error and come back here if successful.

The only software that could interfere with TH under screensaver mode could be diskkepper 9  that I have set to run in screensaver mode. Even tough the probability that diskkeeper 9 was defragmenting that specific file at the same as TH was trying to replace it is (to me) very remote.

Perhaps DiskKeeper is locking whole folders at a time? The defrag process causing this seems like a reasonable explanation.

That could be!
I will put TH folder in the DK exclusion list and see what happens.

Thanks,

My Rulesets.ini problem solved.

Recently activated a WinPatrol option to protect the hosts file and other "critical system files", and the time frames matched.  Deactivated the option - and manual update ok.

Hi Guys

I have had this same problem on a daily basis for some time on several machines most of which run the same combination of SP2, NOD32 and a Norton 2003 firewall doing internal network duties behind a Hardwired NAT Routers / Firewalls also I have MS Antispyware, Spybot S&D & Adaware SE running on all PCs. All the PCs are running on 4.2/908 and manual update works no problems.

You are saying that it is a hosts / settings protection issue OK but I need to narrow it down a bit. I have 4 pcs on this network, 2 never have any trouble and 2 that always fail also 3 other PCs on another network 2 are fine and 1 always fails live update.

As far as I can remember without trawling through all the PCs the setups are identical, I set them up to be identical and I have the only admin access but the problem is on 3 machines out of 7 so before I spend a week looking for mis-set settings in all the above can somebody confirm I am looking for an outside protection agent as the cause and have a guess at the most likely suspect?

Its not a massive problem cos I can manually update but it is time consuming and a pain also the boss wants this in a lot more PCs so I need to know WTF it is.

 Smiley

Thanks
