Anyone know of any reported problems with the Microsoft Update website? - I tried it several times today and it threw up an error each time, I've not had any similar problems with it for a long time.

Appears to be working for me.  In fact, there is an optional update for Vista....Windows Live Essentials.  Cheesy

Ok thanks siliconman, I'll try again later on - probably just a transient glitch or heavy demand on the update site as pre-conficker patching panic sets in!   Shocked
