Hello everybody, I have been using my social security number for my taxation purposes. But, I have been recently intimidated by my lawyer that since the crime of identity theft has been on the high I should be careful in using it. I am really concerned about this and need to know whether there are any ways by which we can protect them.

Read these articles, please

Also be aware that there is a telephone scam going on now concerning the impending tax rebate.  Pretending to be the IRS, the scammer requests your SSN so that they can send you the rebate check.  The IRS never asks for your SSN over the telephone or in e-mails.

I assume that this is a serious question you are asking.

The answer:  YES, there a thousands of social security numbers stolen daily.

Why?

-  To create bank and credit accounts in your name.
-  To gain access to your bank account and credit accounts.
-  To perform other criminal acts using your identity.
-  To gain access to your home address for the purpose of burglarizing your home.

It's a multi-billion dollar, well-organized, highly effective criminal business.
