Here are some items to consider. 1. Install a hardware firewall/nat router if you are using cable or DSL. This is one of the most significant items to enhance security. 2. Install a strong software firewall and anti-virus/malware program (either as a suite or individual components). Norton Internet Security 2008, Kaspersky Internet Security V7, Avira, and NOD32 are all very strong security suites. Be sure to select one that scans incoming/outgoing e-mail. 3. Install supplemental security programs such as TrojanHunter and/or SuperAntiSpyware to enhance the detection of malware with item 2 above. 4. Implement freebie programs SpywareBlaster and Hostsman. 5. Maintain your Windows version up-to-date with all current hotfixes. 6. Use a more secure browser such as IE7 or FireFox and ensure that its settings are at a level of maximum security for your specific needs. 7. Keep your system free of junk/temporary files and folders by frequently using a cleaning program such as freebie CCleaner. 8. Maintain all your security and system level software at the latest version levels (and security software with the latest detection rules). 9. Hone up/read/study on what causes infections and then practice the safest techniques to prevent infections. There are many good reference sites that discuss security practices on the Internet. 10. Recognize that the cybercriminals are involved in a multi-billion dollar business to infect your system and steal information from you that they can profit from. They are shrewd, they are smart, they are highly technical, they are relentless and fast to adapt, and they are many. 11. And lastly, don't overload your system with a multitude of "security" programs. Choose wisely and selectively. A few very good security programs is far better for security and for the efficient and fun utilization of your computer. HTHs
