Check for KB911564 patch installed?

Hi Magnus,

In answer to your question at Broadband Reports -

http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r18866575-Analysis-of-an-Ecard-Exploit-P age

- I was thinking maybe the best advice to give is simply to go to MS Update and make sure you have all patches up to date.

Another fairly simple way would be to go to Control Panel/ Add/Remove Programs and check for KB911564 there.

If people have CCleaner installed they can also click 'Tools' and the Uninstall window also lists patches - I guess it just gets these from Control Panel/ Add/Remove anyway.

Though I guess with these methods there would be a *slight* risk of people clicking around a bit and accidentally uninstalling the patch  Shocked

It's kind of a drag when you mitigate one risk and inadvertently introduce a new one!  Grin

Rather off-topic, but has anyone actually had any problems with CCleaner registry cleaner ('Issues' button) ? I often see people saying use CCleaner but don't whatever you do use the registry cleaner, however I've used it on Windows XP and Windows 98 without any problems. I guess it may not be the best or deepest registry tool out there, but that's different from saying don't use it at all.

Ok I was bored at work so I've just run CCleaner registry cleaner on my work machine (XP Pro) for the hell of it ... on first reboot it hung for five heartstopping minutes on 'applying computer settings' ...  Shocked Shocked Shocked ... OMG was I going to have to go to the kind and understanding IT support team and casually say hey guys I was just testing an unrecommended registry cleaning tool on my machine and err ... kind of ... it doesn't work any more ...  Embarassed Cry Cry Cry ... but HALLELUJAH it worketh still !!! ... and I've had my little adrenalin fix for the day  Smiley

Amazing what you have to do to stay awake at work sometimes ....  Wink

The reason I always request that a user not run the Issues component of CCleaner is that I do not know the computer skill level of the person requesting support.  Often, registry cleaners will remove valid keys of AV programs and other security programs....even such cleaners as jv16 PowerTools and Ace Utilities do this.  If a user has never cleaned their registry before and, on top of that, do not have the computer skills to watch out for "mistakes" during a registry cleaning, it can lead to major problems...as I feel sure you recognize.

So when users are here requesting support to remove malware, I just do not think it is appropriate to cloud the issues by performing a general registry cleaning during the disinfection-  whether it be with CCleaner or any other registry cleaner.  That exercise can be taught/learned in a different classroom  Wink.

Hi siliconman01, yes I entirely see your point about not running a general registry clean during malware removal procedures, so thanks for clarifying this.  Wink

On the specific point of registry cleaners removing valid security program registry entries, for what it's worth I can say that I've used CCleaner registry cleaner component on four machines with different combinations of OS and security programs without encountering any problems.  Smiley
