Am I being watched?

Hey all
I just recieved my username and password for my wireless internet connection at my univ.
 
how to know if i'm being watched?
and what to do to prevent being watched?
and if i'm watched, what can they know about me and what i'm doing on my laptop?

I was told i have to go to the IT department and submit my univ ID so they could enable me to get access to the wireless connection.
 
i won't do anything "unethical" i just hate being watched!
 
so, can i know if i'm being watched, if yes how can i disable them(if i can)
