Threat Trends 2004-2005
According to Panda Software, viruses are going out of style. By strict definitions, less than 1% of new threats in 2005 were viruses, but Trojan horses, generally distributed for malicious profits, are rapidly gaining.

Especially considering that much spyware has similar infection vectors and behavior to trojans, that doesn't surprise me.  I first noticed this by looking at Sophos updates page: http://www.sophos.com/downloads/ide/ -- as, more and more of the entries are "bots" and "Troj" entries; fewer are worm and virus entries.  Wink

I guess this reflects the trend for "commercial trojans" i.e. adware also discussed recently here -

However the Panda software threat listing shown in the pcmag article claims that the "adware/spyware" category has declined from 3% to 2% from 2004 to 2005 - that seems somewhat unlikely to me.  Maybe their definition of adware strictly excludes anything with trojan-like behaviour? - however that definition does not seem to accord with the generally accepted definition as I understand it - i.e. that a trojan developed for pushing ads would generally considered to be adware.
