TH - updates - TH Guard

a)  This has only happened twice (I think), but why after TH updates does the app indicate that no file definitions are loaded and that therefore, TH Guard is no longer "on guard?"

b)  And, I almost hesitate to ask this as I don't want anyone to take umbrage and think I'm trying to start a flame war but I do wonder about this: I'd read on some site that they thought TH had weak signature files/updates... and, to tell the truth, I'm bit hazy on what a "weak or strong" signature update is, as I'm not a programmer and really don't know how these things work.

I > do < use paid ver. of TH, & can say it did find a sneaky pete in an ADS on one of my NTFS drives a while back, and that's more than I can say about some other apps that I use,  so please do not misconstrue an honest, legit query about signatures as an insult to TH's author, or his fine app, TH.

Thanks for any info/advice,

This should not be occurring...it is obviously not the desired outcome from installing an update.   Sad

-  Are you using V4.2, Build 908?
-  What Windows OS are you using and is it fully updated?
-  What other security software are you running?
-  What type of Internet access are you using?
-  When you shutdown THGuard and restart it, does the problem resolve?

and, to tell the truth, I'm bit hazy on what a "weak or strong" signature update is,

Security programs are increasing becoming cross-detection type programs.  For example, anti-virus programs are incorporating spyware/adware/trojan/worms definitions, etc., etc.

TrojanHunter's primary focus has been Trojans, dangerous worms, rootkits, and limited spyware/malware.  It is not capable of detecting viruses.  The detection of spyware is being increased in recent months.  More and more spyware/adware definitions are being filtered into TH's definitions with each update.

It is very difficult to compare databases and draw conclusions of weak/strong (based on detection/removal capability) when just comparing raw numbers of ruleset/definitions as presented by the various detection/scanner programs.

As stated, TH's focus has been centered around trojans, worms, rootkits.  Things get even more clouded because various antivirus programs were/have been/are naming/specifying some spyware as trojans when in fact they are not.  This is because there has not been clear global standardization by the security software industry on what constitutes a trojan, spyware, malware, adware, etc.  This is being resolved as we speak....at least, that is my understanding and impression.

In my opinion, TH's ruleset is indepth for its intended and stated purpose-  Trojans.  Obviously, new ones are appearing daily and Mischel is working diligently to keep its customers protected.   Cheesy

HTHs and is not too windy!   Wink

Siliconman01;

Many thanks for your reply, and info that you gave.  To answer your questions about OS, & versions that I run:

I do have/run latest ver. and build of TH.
The OS: XP PRO, SP2 & all current critical updates.

Security apps: I normally run more security apps than any 2-3 people that you know, tho' I tried to go easy on that this time around, after getting new HD (with PRO as OS installed).  After latest PC repairs, re-installing security apps, & updating them was high priority as you may imagine.

Internet: still poking along on dial-up connection.
===================================
The time or two that Guard was "crippled" after updates I opened Guard to recheck Enabled box as I found that it was unchecked, and no, I didn't do that but found it that way - and that seemed to take care of that.

And not sure if I recall this correctly, from the first time that this happened but I think that I found within TH itself, there was an error about where definitions were stored - i.e., where TH was to look for said definitions.  I corrected that, of course, and that took care  of it.

But as to why this happened, at all, is what I wondered about.

============================================

I'm aware that author/s of security apps must put time & effort into creating an app, and updating it (and I for one always apprciate their efforts on our behalf - and sure, it's a business and they can be rewarded for their work if an app serves its purpose).

I for one think that we should all pay an annual fee for TH., as we've become accustomed to that business model by now with other apps, and I've written TH's author, saying that he too deserves an annual renewal fee, as it were.  After all, after you've sold x number of widgets, after that the work resides in the updates, & perhaps updating the main app itself if/as needed.

As I understand it, a program author has to be atop latest threats, find a sample of the latest "black hat" to study it, discover how to counteract it, write antidote for it and then get updates to current  customers - that's not an easy thing to do, I should imagine and not to mention, the time involved in such undertakings.

And again, I certainly am happy that TH and its author is out there, helping to keep cyberspace a safer place for us all, and I for one wouldn't mind paying yearly fee to help TH, and its author.
