Preventing direct file access from address bar

Hi,

I would like to know if there is a relatively simple way of preventing a person to directly access a file from the address bar. For example, if, on the web server, there is the following file:

\dir1\subdir1\file1.pdf

I would like to prevent anyone from reading the file by just typing the paths and filename. I would greatly appreciate your help!

Thanks in advance,
Timothy
