Why should I trust this Forum?

Hi,
I registerd on this Forum to find out some things about Trojan Hunter, which I am trying out. However I was unable to post topics or even browse from one page to another as I was automatically logged out by any action I took!!

Mischel told me by email that I need to give the forum trusted status in my Firewall (Zone Alarm Pro Suite). This does work!

However I have been stung by several Forums in the past. A few sessions on one left me deluged with spam. I now no longer use my real name or main email at any forum!!! Moreover after visting Microsofts own update site I had repeated hacking attempts made on me. For this reason I generally don't give ANY site trusted status! Even my BANK doesn't need trusted status. No other forum I have used requires trusted status! VERY VERY STRANGE!

I hope someone can say why! or even better stop the site requiring this!!!!

I will now log off and remove trusted status from this forum. Very ironic for a security concious company!     Undecided

I think all you need do is allow cookies for the Site, in order to stay logged in.  Most sites require cookies for login.

There is no security issue here except the one you have created in your head. You need to read up on what cookies are and why they are needed on web forums to keep the server aware of who you are logged in as.

Also... my suggestion was to add forum.misec.net as a trusted site in Internet Explorer, not in ZAP. I don't know why ZAP would block cookies, and not having used a recent version I can't check. But the basic issue is with cookies (text files) that need to be enabled for forum.misec.net.

Also make sure ZAP's Cookie control is not set at High. Set at medium or disable when surfing the forum.

Just add this to ZAP's Privacy Site List:

forum.misec.net

Then allow session and permanent cookies.  You can  probably get it to work OK without allowing third-party cookies but I do that in order to get the login to work in all my browsers {Opera, Netscape, IE}.  Some browsers are particular so you may need to allow third-party cookies too, if you have your slider for Cookie Control set to High.

Or, you can do as Untouchable J suggests and put the Cookie Control on Medium or Disabled, and that will work without having to customize settings for "forum.misec.net".

Or just to see your Yahoo! icon, Randy Grin

Seriously, the only thing you need to select for the site to work without ZA Privacy popping up is the Privacy-Site List-Private Headers option. You can tick them all for this site (Web Bugs and Third-Party Cookies) without problem. And this is only to stop the pop-up. It doesn't make the site work any better... Grin

BTW it's a good thing to have your real persona kept private, so well done on that decision. My real name is unpronouncable in any Earth language, so I just use 'Ian' for speediness...

I made it clear in my original email to MIS that I was allowing cookies. I had tried allowing 3rd party cookies before even contacting anyone, this made no difference at all! COOKIES WERE NOT AND ARE NOT THE ISSUE AT ALL!. MIS emailed me back and gave the correct solution which was to make this forum a trusted site in Zone Alarm. This did and still does work. I HAVE NEVER BLOCKED COOKIE USE.

It is quite alarming that people are expected and seem willing to change security/privacy settings on the fly. This leads to such obvious posibilities of forgetting to reset it back to a more secure setting afterwards. I have to do this to post here. The security problem may not be with your Forum site, but with other sites when you go onto them and have forgotten to reset your security settings!

It still seems to me bizzare in the extreem that a company creating security software requires its users to do this. Perhaps others don't have such high security settings and havn't seen the issue I'm talking about! Their problem not mine!

After  reading  the  above  I'm sure that   certainly  you   do  not  know  and  understand  "  we  "  here   and  ,  of  course  , Magnus .

Members  or  lurkers  of  the  so  called  Security & Privacy  Forums  do  have  a  very  peculiar  mind-set  which  is  reflected  in  their  systems  configurations  and  use  of  their  computers .

We  have  here  several  ZA  users  and  even  ZLabs  beta-testers  and  " team-Z" members . Perhaps  they  need  to  read  your  post  to  learn  something  about  their ZA  settings  .

On  the  other  hand  ,  it  seems  that  all  the  other  members  here  ,  using  different   FWS  ,  don't  know  how  to  configure  our  browsers   ,  as  we  never  complained  about  that  with  Magnus .

Well  ,  at  least    now  I  know    all risks  involved  when   posting   here  .

  Regards  ,
