Homepage Hijacking

Hi Everyone,

Sometimes my browser homepage is reset and links added to my favourites folder. Also sometimes I find a trojan downloader or something like that in my Windows folder. (uharc)

I have so many security programs running but none of them intercept these breaches. What can I do. I'm using TH, THG, NOD32, Outpost Pro 2.0 & Pest Patrol so I just get so mad when these things get through without my permission. How come they can't be intercepted by my firewall which I set at full protection??

What else do I have to do?

Trojan Hunted,

When I read your post my first thought was, whatever is doing this might be something already installed on your computer. But, then, this wouldn't explain how it could be getting through OP. (same fw I use)

However, if the program that is doing this is part of a program that is:

1. already installed, and
2. already has permission to access the internet,
this might explain what is going on.
Don't know if this is a possibility, or not. Have you considered this possibility?

I'm not personaly familiar with Pest Patrol, but I've heard good things about it.

Also, claire suggested, "SpywareGuard."

I myself use:
--Ad-aware (6.0 plus)
--Spybot - Search & Destroy (Spybot S & D),

I keep these regularly updated and run a search on my system about once a week or more often if surfing the web a lot. I have noted, sometimes, one of these programs will catch something that the other one seems to miss.

Additionally, I also use (& keep updated):
SpywareBlaster.

Are you concerned about the little grey boxes with text only messages?  If so, they are using the same protocol that allows you to use a network printer and it to send messages through that protocol to you.  www.grc.com has an excellent little program to take care of it for you, which is free I believe.

As to the other issues of spyware, Spyware Guard is a good program, but you should also check and see if your permissions are set correctly on your browser.  Even the best protection will not work if you allow it to be bypassed by other settings.

I'm using Mozilla Firebird as one of my browsers. I get the odd page starting up Java, I see the icon in the notification area of my task bar. I right click and exit when I see it. Hijackthis is supposed to show you problems with this Homepage hijacking isn't it? I'm sure  that  there are people that frequent this forum that can read these things

Another good app. is winpatrol. It will warn you about cookies. It will also show you programs that you can disable at startup. I love it...I hate all the cookies websites put on your computer.

As I understand it, most hijackers are coming in thru port 80 via Active X download.  Other's are allowed in thru security vulnerabilities in IE.

If you set your Active X to prompt or disabled in Internet Options & keep IE & Windows fully patched you can prevent the majority of reoccurances.  See the following article for recomended Active X settings & other good info:

http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

I've followed this advice & never had a problem with hijackers.  And I don't have Spywareblaster or Spywareguard installed.  But I'm a pretty conservative surfer. I hear running Spywareblaster & Spywareguard in concert will prevent the vast majority scumware & make programs like Pest Patrol, AdAware, etc., nearly unneeded.

Alternatively, as mentioned before, running any other browser, such as Mozilla, Opera, etc., prevents you from being subjected to the security holes of IE.  But don't try "enhanced" IE browsers like MyIE2, Crazy Browser, Slim Browser, etc.--they use the IE engine so are subject to the same vulnerabilities.

Hope all this info is correct & useful to you.  Also hope that, if I'm mistaken about any of this, the good folks here will chime in with corrections.

Happy Holidays. Smiley Wink Cheesy Grin
