Novice confused...

Hi,

I have searched the web - downloaded tons of trial software and read tons of dejanews posts...but Im still confused. Hopefully someone can shine a light Smiley

The problem is the terms and definitions of "malware". I would like to point out that by "malware" I mean: Some kind of software that on purpose cracks up my system or in other way doesnt do my any good. I know what u think, and u are right Smiley - but lets keep it security related - then u probably all know what Im talking about.

I have come across words like: AntiVirus, AntiHacker anti-this and anti-that. And the problem is that I dont really know what Im "secured" of - and what Im not....

Obviously Trojan Hunter secures against "Trojans". And not against viruses - I got that one allright. But does this mean that I still want a program like "Ad-Aware"? Or is TH dealing with the same "malware" issues as "ad-aware"?

Virus, Trojans, Worms etc etc...I dont really know what program deals with which thread. Hope u can read beyond my crappy English Smiley

What programs do I need in order to be "safe"? Something to guard against Trojans. Something to guard against Virus. And...eh is that it?

Tia,
Supermule

Hola Mule,
Not sure I understand what it is you're asking, exactly. Are you looking for definitions?

But . . . did you say you are a (network) administrator, looking to change from using TDS on your machines? Isn't TDS a top notch program, with really good protection, like a 3 in one, kind of like a "suite" of programs?

Just curious, don't know much about the program. Heard it was good though.
Hasta la vista,

If you weren't confused enough, some companies have different terms for the same piece of malware. Some calling it a Virus and others a Trojan.  I can't answer all the good questions you have here, but I can recommend that you check out ComputerCops.biz's General Security Forum.  It is free to register there and take a walk through the Forums. In the near future there may even be a Paper or Two on these subjects.

 Hello  ,  again  , Supermule

The  " usual "  security  apps  are  : AV + AT + FW , the triade .These  three will take care of viruses , worms , trojans  and  port scans .
If  you  want  an anti-spyware  you  can  use  also  Ad-Aware  and/or  SpyBot  - this you  take  care of some security and the privacy threats .
I  think  that  , together with the triade , you can always have one of the anti-spywares above mentioned installed in your machine .
But  remember that  common-sense , updates/patches  and  the  "correct"  browser and e-mail  settings are vital components of your system .

You  can read some interesting texts here :

And  if  you  never  used  before , take  a  look  at  IE-SPYAD - it's the best  Restricted Sites settings  you  could  get .

And  the  curious  "Enough is Enough" .
